Description/Use: Pelican, Case
Large, sturdy and waterproof Pelican Cases are ideal containers. They offer
protection from the elements and convenience of being lockable and having
multiple carry/grab options (including wheels).

Description/Use: Suunto Tandem, Inclinometer
The inclinometer is a site survey tool and can be used in many ways. You can
determine accurate heading (compass) directions, measure slopes and measure
inaccessible heights (with a little math).

Description/Use: Pocket Magnifier, Combination(x5/x7/x12)
The pocket magnifier is great for inspecting paint scratches and other damaged areas.
A magnification rating of 10x is useful in a variety of applications.

Description/Use: Laser Range Finder
The laser range finder is great for quickly measuring long distances or distances over
rough terrain.

The GPS is useful in creating your site map and marking specific points at the scene
for reference (even after things have been moved). It is also handy to mark where
you find debris as you move about the accident site.

Description/Use: Digital Voice Recorder
The digital voice recorder is obviously great for any interviews you may need to
conduct but it also can be used to dictate site notes to in situations where the
elements are not favorable for pen/paper note taking (rain, wind/dust, etc).

Description/Use: Light, Headlamp
The headlamp is invaluable in a nighttime accident investigation but it can also be
very useful when you need both of your hands to examine items or need to look in
confined spaces.

Description/Use: Light, Flashlight (80 Lumen)
The flashlight is important and must be tough and provide enough light. Recommend
you find one that is metal/hardened aluminum (aircraft grade), waterproof, LED
bulb (or bulbs) and produces 80 Lumen of light or more.

Description/Use: Measuring/Drafting Tools
Rulers and protractors are very useful in drawing your site map and as reference items
in a picture to show relative size and deflection angle.

Recommend a steel blade and self retracting for short ground distance measuring.

Description/Use: 2000’ Caution Tape
Use caution tape to control your accident site. It can also be used to tie things off if
rope or alternates are not available.

Use to mark debris locations, significant ground markings or reference measured
points. Recommend minimum flag 3”x2.5” and 30” rod size and 50 flags or more
depending on the expected size of you accident scene.

A large tool bag is useful if your site is hard to access or you need to work remotely
from your full kit, you can pack what you need and still keep it together.

Tools and mirrors can be used to examine wreckage, look into confined spaces and
keep your other investigation kit items working.

The plastic bags and tags are useful for storing collected samples and keeping anything
(wallet, cell phone, paperwork, etc) dry in wet weather.

Maintaining team health and hygiene on site is important, especially if you have to
handle dirty/oily items.

A large tarp will help if you have to cover a site or ground markings to prevent loss of
evidence. It can also be used to wrap up large exhibits/evidence. Finally it makes
a good shelter from sun/rain if you need it.

At an accident site personnel safety is paramount, having respirators available will
allow you to work with protection from know air contamination (not intended for
unknown entry or hazardous vapors that require a higher protection).

Accident sites are dangerous places (sharps, bent metal, broken glass, etc), being
prepared for on-site first aid protects personnel from possible infections due to
delayed treatment.

Shop towels are good for site hygiene and cleaning or handling debris/evidence for
inspection.

Latex gloves can be used to protect hands from unknown chemical while inspecting
the accident site and to handle dirty/oily parts/evidence.

A good camera will help you quickly preserve your accident site and capture visual
evidence. Be sure to cleaning equipment and extra batteries to ensure it is ready
for use.

Make sure you have anything you like to use (clip board, notebooks, paper pads,
grease pens, etc) and items like pens/pencils have at least two, because they tend
to fail.

Again, things you like to use but at a minimum laptop and cell phone depending on the
size/remoteness of the site. Keep your eye out for new and helpful technology,

No kit is ever “complete” because there are many variables on
an accident site that can change your needs. A kit should
continue to grow, add things you find you need and remove or
reduce items that never get used.
