Reading for the Key Idea in a Sentence
Although a sentence may give much
information, it usually offers one key idea.
Readers should learn to find the key idea in
order to clearly understand the meaning of a
sentence.
The key idea of a sentence usually tells:
1. what a person or an object is, and
2. what a person or an object is doing

Explanation
This sentence tells about “he” (John
Blandford). We know that he would see the
woman. All the information about when he would
see her, who the woman was, and how she had
given him strength, adds details. The details are
helpful in completing the scene for the reader,
and we need to rely on these details to make the
key idea clearer. But the key idea in this sentence
is simply “he would see the woman”.

Passage 1
Most summer school courses in Britain
last for two to four weeks. During that time
students live either with a British family, or
at the school, or in a hotel. They have about
15 hours of lessons every Monday to Friday,
usually in the mornings. Each school has a
lot of different courses. Some are for
beginners and others are for intermediate or
advanced students.

the teachers are all from English-speaking

don’t just speak English in the classroom.
[Q3] They are in Britain, so they speak and
read and hear it outside, too. That’s why they
learn so quickly and [Q2] why a summer
school course is really a holiday.

Can you imagine ice that does not melt

It is quite different from ordinary ice
which is simply frozen water. [Q10] Dry ice
was first manufactured in 1925. It has

[Q9] Since it turns into steam, instead of
melting into water, it is cleaner to use. For
these reasons, it is extremely popular and
many people prefer it to ordinary ice. Dry
ice is so cold that if you touch it with your
bare fingers, it will burn you.
