What is an Adverb?
• An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb.
• An adverb answers the questions how,
where, when, why,how often, to what extent,
and how much.
Where to place an adverb.
An adverb that modifies an adjective or
another adverb is placed before the
word.
 An adverb that modifies a verb can be
placed after the verb, before the verb, or
at the beginning of the sentence.

Intensifiers
• Intensifiers are adverbs that modify adjectives or
other adverbs.
• They are usually placed before the words they
modify.
• They usually answer the question to what extent.

Word endings
• Adverbs usually end in the letters -ly to
adjectives.
• Sometimes the base word changes when ly is added.
sudden

heavy
Add -ly
suddenly
Drop the e and add truly
-ly
Change the y to i
heavily
and add -ly

1) The doors to the junior high school open (easy,
easily).
2) To win the World Series, a team must play
(real, really) well.
3) The valedictorian recited her speech (perfect,
perfectly).
4) Effective student body officers take their job
(serious, seriously).
