The US Without Power
• What causes power outages?
– Hurricanes
– Blizzards
– Severe Thunderstorms
– Ice Storms
– Tornados
– Extreme Heat Waves
• Power outages can last from a few hours to several weeks
• What starts as an inconvenience can quickly become a
criticality
Case Study: Hurricane Sandy

The US Without Power
• What do consumers do when a pending storm is
approaching?
– Raid the local stores for:
• Water
• Medication
• Food
• Batteries
• Flashlights
Battery Statistics
US consumers purchase 3 billion batteries annually, averaging 32
per family or 10 per person
US consumers throw away approximately 2.9 billion batteries per
year - or 179,000 tons – that end up in landfills
When dumped into landfills, batteries can leach mercury, lead,
cadmium and nickel into the groundwater.
Recycling programs at retail outlets are only scratching the surface –
waste caused by disposing of single-use batteries is a true
environmental problem.
Our Approach
• We repurpose depleted, single-use batteries
– Depleted batteries have approximately 60-70% of
remaining energy left
– Not enough to power the most simplest of home
devices – such as flashlight
– But more than enough to power the AC Power Box
The AC Power Box
• Converts DC power to AC power
• Harnesses energy from depleted single-use
batteries
• Powered by 1.5 Volt flashlight batteries
- new or depleted
• Powers LED lights and radios for multiple,
consecutive hours without any degradation in
performance
