PROMISES OF SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGY: POTENTIAL DEVICES AND SYSTEM DESIGN Institute of Information and Communication Technology, BUET. Presenter: DR. Nowshad Amin PV Seminar 9 January , 2011 Nowshad Amin accomplished his education until the higher secondary level from his native country, Bangladesh. He was then selected for the Japanese Ministry of Education (MONBUSHO) scholarship, where he achieved diploma (March, 1994) in Electrical Engineering from Gunma National College of Technology, Bachelor degree (March, 1996) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan. Subsequently, he got his Masters (March,1998) and PhD (March, 2001) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, where he pursued research on low cost and high efficiency cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film solar cell fabrication and characterization. However, Dr. Nowshad Amin started his professional career in the semiconductor products sector of Motorola Japan Ltd. in April 2001, which later span-off as Freescale Semiconductor Ltd. worldwide. His main focus was on communication micro-processors, design of passive optical network processors etc. However, amid of service in Motorola, he pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of South Florida on CdTe thin film solar cells. Since, Nov. 2004, Dr. Amin has been working in Malaysia with present affiliation at The National University of Malaysia (@ Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, UKM) as an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Electrical Electronic and Systems Engineering. He also holds the position of group leader for “PV systems & Advanced Solar Cells” Research Group (one of the eight distinguished groups in 2009 with VC Award) under Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) of The National University of Malaysia. Topics to be addressed: • Renewable Energy Resources • Solar PV and Thermal Options • Solar Photovoltaic Technologies • First generation solar cell: Silicon • Fabrication of crystalline silicon based solar cells • Issues and limitations • Trends and promises to better future Learning Outcome: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to get overall idea about the renewable energy resources, especially solar photovoltaic technology, solar cell, potential materials for solar cells, fabrication technologies, and recent trend of the promising thin film solar PV technologies. Dr. Amin has authored numerous research articles in both cited journals and conference proceedings. He also possesses a few patents mostly on solar PV technologies as well as numerous research funds. The research group he has been leading was awarded as one of the best research groups in 2009. He is actively involved in promoting Renewable Energy to the developing countries in South and South East Asia, working as consultant to some Solar PV manufacturers in both Bangladesh and Malaysia. Dr. Nowshad Amin is currently holding a visiting professorship position at the King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Who Should Attend: Students, Researchers, Engineers, Lab Supervisors, Semiconductor Material and Device Scientist, Renewable Energy Enthusiasts, Policy Makers in both Private and Public Sectors, NGOs.
