or each enterprise it is important to be able to optimize the use of resources (Material, skill, human) so that at minimum cost best product as per market requirement in required quantities are made available in accordance with the law of the land so as to maximize the return on capital such that profit is maximized.

From the communication network requirement aspect the ERP solutions can be grouped as a) Physical exchange of information through documents from stand alone functional centers.

This technique has a major requirement of reconciliation of data manually.

Communication Network requirement :- A few telephone lines and FAXes b) Transfer of documented information through electronic network from stand alone networks thus increasing the periodicity of information flow but the need for reconciliation of data is as in previous case but effort on correction of data is substantially reduced.

Communication Network requirement:- Few computers at least one each at the geographically separated functional centers.


Time sharing of data periodically in the day with allotted time for network availability for different functions. This reduces the data processing requirements at stand alone functional centers but reconciliation is still required.

Communication Network requirement:- Few computers at each geographically separated functional centers having LAN at geographical center with shared communication medium between these functional centers .

d) On line continuous dynamic management and sharing of information.

The data synchronization is automatic and all functional center working becomes dependent and cannot function without communication network.

Communication Network requirement:- The information and activities should be entered in standardized formats on computer network such that all computers having functioning related data should be networked in LAN

/WAN at the geographically separated functional centers. A data management software is required for information management.

Communication centric application based dynamic resource management. The information is not only shared on line but availability of past history, trends and solutions to similar problems are available on line to the decision maker such that quality of decisions improves ( quick, similar by different person in organization, correct as they are not based on hunch and perception).

This requires intelligent communication network capable of allowing heavy processing capabilities and record management.

Communication Network requirement:- The information and activities should be entered in standardized formats on computer network .All computers should be networked through high capacity low latency with multiple path protection in LAN /WAN at the geographically separated functional centers. A dedicated data management software is required having required processing capabilities.

RailTel is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Railways, with authorized capital of Rs. 1000/- Crores and was formed in Sept

2000 with the objectives to create nation wide Broadband

Telecom and Multimedia Network in all parts of the country, to modernize Train Control Operation and Safety System of Indian

Railways and to significantly contribute to realization of goals and objective of national telecom policy 1999.

Railtel : Formed as initiative of ministry of Railways with a concern of Department of telecommunication to make available the infrastructure created by railways for the use of nation and thus improve utilization of investment in national infrastructure for development.

It has a nation wide OFC network of 42000Route Km connecting all major cities and centers with point of presence in more than

4000 cities in the country . Has several city POPS in major cities.

Railtel has exclusive right of way along railway track giving it a freedom to establish OFC network promptly as per need.

Railtel has also built up a OFC city access network in all major cities for meeting customer requirements.

It has team of experts derived from Railway telecom network as well as industry talent so that complete solution is given to customers requiring the services.

Railtel network is completely managed by itself and is not dependent on OFC or any other network component from any other agency .

It has latest network using state of the art DWDM network .The

MPLS network is based on layered architecture using high capacity core routers supported by access routers for customers.
