Low cost Vessel Monitoring Technology on
UK inshore vessels – MF1214
• This Defra funded project aims to develop a robust and widely
accepted vessel tracking system for inshore vessels
• To demonstrate compliance with various fisheries management
agreements, such as marine protected areas (MPAs).
• The project involves 30 vessels in the SW utilising GPRS (mobile
phone) technology
• This project builds upon the success of the inshore vessel tracking
project undertaken by Seafish and Fishermen

The key Technical Aims of the project will be to:
• To develop a cost effective, tamperproof VMS system applicable
for inshore fishing vessels
• To develop an online system to record and monitor vessel
movements
• To develop a sensor system to detect and record when a vessel is
fishing.
• To develop a system to allow fishermen to collect data on physical
& environmental parameters
• Bring together all interested parties and stakeholders to ensure
that if successful the technology will integrate will all existing and
future marine information systems.
