Formed in 1982
Member organizations of the Joint Committee on
InterSociety Coordination (JCIC): EIA, IEEE, NAB, NCTA,
SMPTE
Members representing the broadcast, broadcast equipment,
motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable,
satellite, and semiconductor industries
ATSC Digital TV Standards include digital high definition
television (HDTV), standard definition television (SDTV),
data broadcasting, multi-channel surround-sound audio, and

Convergence really means the freedom for consumers to use any
service under any circumstances they choose to
Convergence in Contents and Services
– Same contents/services can be delivered to different receiving devices via
various IP networks
– Formats of contents/services are regulated by standards
Convergence in Receiving Devices with the same APIs
– Various receiving devices can execute the same application with the same
middleware APIs
– APIs are defined as global standards
Convergence in using the same electronic components
– Memories, Microprocessors, Middlewares
Convergence in IP networks
– No matter what physical access networks: xDSL, FTTH, 3G/4G, DVB-T/H/T2,
digital cable, satellite, WLAN, WiMax, LTE, …

Digital Convergence: a whole new way of life
Digital convergence is increasing the importance of content
and services in the ICT sector. For example, television over
IP, (fixed and wireless) is already one of the most successful
triple-play and 3G services.
The digital future is interactive.
Digital life in media and services is therefore not just about
gadgets but about a whole new way of life.
