Look to system quality and innovation for reduced TCO After a typical POS lifespan of 7 years, it is not realistic to assume that an enterprise would manually change out the processors in its POS fleet with the expectation of ROI payback on upgraded processors and installation labor costs. Because any extended lifespan would be limited by the other aging POS components including hard drives, memory, monitors, power supply, advanced input devices and other system components, to assume a meaningful lifespan extension via processor upgrade is misleading. More important to consider is the innovation and quality that goes into the initial POS system purchase to accurately gauge the total cost of lifecycle ownership. Intel AMT technology allows IT to better discover, heal, and protect their networked computing assets. RSS Education Team We Say IBM RMA provides a more complete solution Intel vPro and AMT monitors hardware and peripherals, provides event notifications and conducts software distribution as well as remote shutdown and Wake on LAN. But the Fujitsu/Intel solution is proprietary. Fujitsu’s solution will not support non-Fujitsu systems. The vPro solution requires all devices in the enterprise to have Intel processors to work effectively. And, multiple tool sets are required to manage the entire POS hardware solution. IBM RMA provides a more complete systems management solution, including support for non-IBM components. © 2008 IBM Corporation RE4410S: Selling the IBM SurePOS 700 Model 784 - Competition They Say, We Say They Say vPro/AMT allows Out of Band management vPro and AMT can communicate with system terminals even when powered off. We Say The value of vPro/AMT Out of Band management is highly questionable. - If some type of update is needed the terminal will need to be powered on. Wake on LAN which has been available in our hardware, and RMA, is our answer to this. - Updating system BIOS in a powered off state. How often do BIOS updates really happen, and we have tools like xFlash, lFlash, and ASU that our customers can distribute using RMA to flash the BIOS and change the CMOS settings. - Retrieving system information when powered off. Yes cool, but this will not tell you what Retail I/O is attached, or what micro-code level your keyboard is at. You'll have to power on to find this out. RMA collects the inventory information from the terminals, and I/O and stores it in a database so you can still access the inventory information if the system is powered off. One step further, IBM Director has the ability to set Inventory Monitors to send an event if the inventory has changed from the last collection. Fujitsu - For a vPro solution to work, you need all devices in the enterprise to carry that or the predecessor badge. The POS terminals, the servers they connect to in the store, the servers at the corporate level and so on. Given that vPro (or other solutions, e.g., Microsoft's System Center) have no provisions to manage POS I/O, a retailer implementing will need two system management stacks for a complete solution. RMA and IBM Director provide a single system management solution from the POS to the enterprise. 10 10 RSS Education Team © 2008 IBM Corporation RE4410S: Selling the IBM SurePOS 700 Model 784 - Competition NCR – focused on everything except POS Financials: NCR continues to see weakness in both banking and retail, especially on the hardware side. – Revenue decreased 16 percent from the second quarter of 2008 – NCR quote: "The retail side continues to be challenging in the U.S” Betting on DVD rental kiosks.
