16 오바댜가 아합에게로 가서, 이 사실을 알리니, 아합이 엘리야를 만나러
왔다. 17 아합은 엘리야를 만나서, 이렇게 말하였다. “그대가 바로 이스라엘을
괴롭히는 자요?” 18 엘리야가 대답하였다. “내가 이스라엘을 괴롭히는 것이
아니라, 임금님과 임금님 아버지의 가문이 괴롭히는 것입니다. 임금님께서는
주님의 계명을 내버리고, 바알을 섬기십니다. 19 이제 사람을 보내어,
온 이스라엘을 갈멜 산으로 모아 주십시오. 그리고 이세벨에게 녹을 얻어
먹는 바알 예언자 사백쉰 명과 아세라 예언자 사백 명도 함께 불러
주십시오.” 20 아합은 모든 이스라엘 자손을 부르고, 예언자들을 갈멜 산으로
모았다. 21 그러자 엘리야가 그 모든 백성 앞에 나서서, 이렇게 말하였다.
“여러분은 언제까지 양쪽에 다리를 걸치고 머뭇거리고 있을 것입니까? 주님이
하나님이면 주님을 따르고, 바알이 하나님이면 그를 따르십시오.” 그러나
백성들은 한 마디도 그에게 대답하지 못하였다.22 그래서 엘리야는 백성들에게
다시 이렇게 말하였다. “주님의 예언자라고는 나만 홀로 남았습니다.
그런데 바알의 예언자는 사백쉰 명이나 됩니다. 23 이제, 소 두 마리를 우리에게
가져다 주십시오. 바알 예언자들이 소 한 마리를 선택하여 각을 떠서, 나뭇단
위에 올려 놓되, 불을 지피지는 않게 하십시오. 나도 나머지 한 마리의 소를
잡아서, 나뭇단 위에 올려 놓고, 불은 지피지 않겠습니다. 24 그런
다음에, 바알의 예언자들은 바알 신의 이름을 부르십시오. 나는 주님의 이름을
부르겠습니다. 그 때에, 불을 보내셔서 응답하는 신이 있으면, 바로 그분이
하나님이십니다.” 그러자 모든 백성들은, 그렇게 하는 것이 좋겠다고
대답하였다.
1 Kings 18:16-18:24
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet
Elijah.17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of
Israel?“ 18 "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and
your father's family have. You have abandoned the Lord's commands and
have followed the Baals.19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to
meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of
Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on
Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you
waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is
God, follow him.“ But the people said nothing. 22 Then Elijah said to them, "I
am the only one of the Lord's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and
fifty prophets.23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal's prophets choose one for
themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set
fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to
it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of
the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God."
Then all the people said, "What you say is good."
