THANK A NUTRITIONAL EXPERT




The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly
known as the American Dietetic Association) proudly
announces the fifth annual Registered Dietitian Day.
As the nation's food and nutrition experts, registered
dietitians are committed to improving the health of
their patients and community. Registered Dietitian
Day commemorates the dedication of RDs as
advocates for advancing the nutritional status of
Americans and people around the world.
The WIC and Nutrition Administration would like to
recognize and thank all the Registered and Licensed
Dietitians and Registered Dietetic Technicians.
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!
From the WIC and Nutrition Administration.
MARCH WELLNESS TIPS 2012

March Wellness Tip #1 – 3/5/12


March is National Nutrition Month. We
encourage you to “Get Your Plate in Shape” by
making simple changes to your daily eating habit
that will benefit you for a lifetime.


Check out the following link for simple tips from
Registered Dietitians on how to “Get Your Plate
in Shape” this National Nutrition Month:
MARCH WELLNESS TIP #2 - 3/8/12

Be mindful of your daily caloric needs.


Using a smaller plate helps to avoid
oversized portions.


Watch your liquid calories too. (Could be an
underlying message—hmm?)


Log in to the USDA's Super Tracker which helps plan,
analyze and track your diet and physical activity.



Savor your food more and you may find that you will
eat less!
MARCH WELLNESS TIP #3 – 3/19/12

“Color Your Plate with Salad” is a great way to increase
your veggie intake.


March is National Nutrition Month and a great time to try
new veggies.


Arugula? Radicchio? Bok Choy? Artichoke Hearts?



Be adventurous and try a new vegetable this week while
you work on
“Getting Your Plate in Shape!”

MARCH WELLNESS TIP #4 – 3/26/12

Americans love to snack.



Plan for “smart snacks” that give you a boost of
energy and provide a good supply of vitamins and
minerals…
And are tasty too!


As National Nutrition Month comes to a close,
remember to keep healthy snacks in mind.

EVENT: NUTRITION PRESENTATION AT WEST PALM BEACH
CENTER STAFF MEETING BY WIC AND NUTRITION STAFF ON
MARCH 1, 2012

Target audience: Staff
Total number of attendees:  60
Media coverage: No
Sponsors and estimated cost: None
Brief description of the event – include photos, promo
materials, and any other supporting documents:
WIC & Nutrition staff used a WIC power point presentation to
talk about myplate—various staff stood up and asked
questions to audience and provided information on topics such
as high calories in fast foods and added fats.
Lessons learned from the event - would you do it again, and if
so what would you do differently?
Presentation went well. Staff were interested and asked
questions.





Lessons learned from the event - would you do it again, and if so what would you do differently?
Very few attended the lunch & learn. At the staff meeting presentation on March 1, staff were asked if they
wanted a lunch & learn and staff responded that they were interested and that the best time was the 3rd
Thursday at noon (because of no afternoon clinic). But--that day is often used for luncheons (staff leaving
the center, staff retiring, etc). The day of the lunch & learn, there was a going away party/lunch for a staff
member—many staff attended the luncheon. Emails had been sent out and notices posted for the lunch &
learn before I found out about the goodbye luncheon.
The 3rd Thursday is probably not a good time to have a lunch and learn. On other days, staff are working
and lunches are staggered.



Lessons learned from the event;


Yes, I would like to facilitate another supermarket tour. I would recruit more clients to participate since
only 4 out of 6 invited clients participated in the tour. Since 2 clients missed the bus to arrive on time, I
would allot more time for clients to arrive at the Delray Square Publix. Prior to the tour, review store
directions including bus times with clients.


I recommend providing the tour in the early morning when the store is less populated.

Brief description of the event – include photos, promo materials, and any other supporting
documents:
The nutritionist Marie Allsopp and therapist Michael Amberg hosted a Shopping Matters Tour at
the Publix Supermarket in Riviera Beach on Thursday, March 22, 2012, with the “On the Weigh to
a Better You” weight loss support group. Eight clients attended this tour and they provided
positive feedback. The $10 Challenge which took place at the conclusion of the tour was a success
as all the clients who took part in it were able to purchase items which were consisted mainly of
fresh fruits and vegetables on sale. The tour took approximately two hours and was an excellent
way for the clients to put into practice the lessons learned from the group. Another factor in
making the tour a success was that the supermarket was fairly dead at that time so we ended up
being the life of Publix at that time.
Lessons learned from the event - would you do it again, and if so what would you do differently?
The primary lesson learned was that the large group of eight clients should have been split up into
two to facilitate better learning and improved group interaction. This was a great event as the
clients really enjoyed meeting outside of the clinic setting. Therefore this event is definitely worth
repeating in the future.

course at the Palm Beach State College. Students were asked to donate healthy non-perishable
items to the therapeutic Food Pantry at the West Palm Beach Health Center clinic of the Palm
Beach County Health Department. A donation of approximately 50 lb of non-perishable items were
donated by students of enrolled in the aforementioned course. This assignment was given for extra
credit.
Lessons learned from the event - would you do it again, and if so what would you do differently?
The primary lesson learned was the importance of reiterating instructions over and over again.
This is because in spite of having written and oral instructions advising students not to bring
expired products they still did so.
