Involved parents = successful Panthers! Donna Allen 2014-2015 PTA President AllenFam226@satx.rr.com The Principal’s Podium Well Panthers, we’re off and running in our second nine-week grading period. So far, the school year has been nearly flawless. We’ve just ended Football and Volleyball season and I am proud of our athletes this year. Our football boys had to get used to essentially a whole new boys coaching staff was difficult, but they held tough and never quit. Our girls continued their tradition of excellence in 7th grade and 8th grade. Academically, we are competing as well. At the first UIL Academic Meet, Lopez won first place! It is great to see our kids competing and hear Lopez Middle School sweeping many of the categories. Our students are certainly honed in on the motto, “Second to none.” Our extracurricular groups have been very busy also. Our Choir recently hosted the regional Choir auditions and the district as a whole did extremely well. Upcoming events include Orchestra regional auditions and as always, Band is gearing up for their competitions as well. November 14th is the big Lopez “Pantherama” with games, music food and fun with a dance to immediately follow. Come on out and support the school community! In the San Antonio Middle School Kickoff event hosted by Rawlinson Middle School on October 11, students from several area middle schools competed for the first middle school quiz bowl championship of the year. Teams contended with opposing teams in seven preliminary rounds and three elimination rounds to determine the winning team. Ranked first in the finals, Lopez Red maintained the lead through three elimination rounds against Rawlinson and Bush teams to dominate and qualify for the state championship in April and national championship in May. Receiving the first place trophy were Jared Lange (team captain), Paddy Joyce, Hawkins Nessler, Joey Quismorio, and Sean Guild, all eighth grade students at Jose M. Lopez Middle School. A second team, Lopez Blue, also participated well but lost in a close elimination round against Garcia Red. Members of the Lopez Blue team were eighth graders Jared Morris (team captain), Norman Ellis, Cooper McLean, Lucas Moynihan, and Finny Valorz. This is the second year Lopez Middle School has been involved in the Texas Quiz Bowl Alliance. The Lopez Quiz Bowl was established last year through the inspired efforts of Nikhil Ranjan, now a freshman at Reagan High School contributing to his new high school quiz bowl team. With the return of three veteran members from last year, this year’s Lopez Quiz Bowl teams are true contenders and respected opponents. Saturday’s Kickoff event provided both Lopez teams with a fun, challenging, and collegial testing ground for a season of success. For information about the Texas Quiz Bowl Alliance, go to http://www.texasquizbowl.org For information about the Lopez Middle School Quiz Bowl, please contact Mrs. Ortega at aorteg@neisd.net. Interested 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are always welcome to join the Lopez team! Sample middle school “toss up” tournament questions: 2011 MD is one of about 9600 “near-Earth” examples of these objects rated by the Torino hazard scale. Another one may have created the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatan and caused a mass extinction. For 10 points – name these objects found between Jupiter and Mars in a namesake “belt.” Answer: asteroids (accept near-Earth asteroids; accept meteorite after “Chicxulub”; accept asteroid belt after “belt”) On a planar graph, shading adjacent vertices differently requires no more than this many colors. It is the smallest natural number not in the Fibonacci sequence, and the smallest positive composite number. For 10 points – give this number of faces in a tetrahedron or sides in a quadrangle.
