Our activities are governed not only by our corporate standards, but also by
MSHA (Mining Safety and Health Administration) and various other legislation.
Regular inspections by

While we have programs in place to help ensure the safety of our workers,
each employee, contractor or visitor is also responsible for their safety and the
safety of others. This means:
•
No horseplay on site.
•
Arriving at the site mentally and physically able:
- If you are taking prescribed medication that may affect your
performance, notify your Lafarge contact.
•
Reporting unsafe acts or conditions.
•
Drugs, alcohol, and firearms are not permitted on site.

Before you enter the plant, you must sign in at the main building. We need to
know who is in the plant in case of emergency or in case safety conditions
change. If you will be onsite on off hours, report to the central control room after
signing.
Also remember to sign out
when you leave.

If you are going to enter the quarry or the wharf, you are also required to sign in
at those areas.

We have a well-equipped first aid station and an ERT (Emergency Response
Team) is on site at all times:
•
The first aid station is located in the main building.

If you require first aid, go to the first aid station (if you are able) and contact the
control room.

As part of our overall safety policy, we have procedures in place for
emergencies such as fire:
•

Fire extinguishers and fire pulls are located throughout the site for use in
fighting small fires.
If a fire cannot be safely extinguished, leave the area and notify your
contact or control room immediately.

If a plant evacuation is required, the evacuation alarm will sound continuously.
When you hear the alarm, go quickly to the evacuation assembly point for the
area you are in.
Stay at the assembly point until
directed elsewhere by your contact.

If you are working in the Feedend Building, an alarm may sound signalling an
evacuation:

Evacuation plans and designated
assembly points are posted in each area
of the site. Check the plan in your area to
make sure you know the evacuation
procedure, route and assembly point.

To help ensure your safety at Lafarge, you are required to wear personal
protective equipment, or PPE. Items required at all times include:

Steel-toed safety boots
(6" min. height)
Hard hat
Safety glasses with side shields
Check for requirements in all areas.

High visibility apparel must be worn in all areas of the plant. The high
visibility apparel (vest, shirt or jacket) must be the last outer garment
worn on the body.

Hearing protection (ear plugs or ear muffs) is required in many areas
of the site. These areas are clearly marked.

In some areas, dual hearing protection is recommended due to the
high noise level (above 100 decibels). In these areas, ear plugs and
ear muffs are required.
Areas requiring double hearing
protection will be identified with signs.

Because you may be exposed to dusty conditions in almost any area of
the plant, always carry respiratory protection and wear it when
appropriate:
•
Dust masks are easy to use
and provide effective protection
against dust.
Long-term exposure to dust,
without protective equipment
such as a dust mask, can cause
health problems.

If you will be entering a barge, or within 6' (1.8 m) of the water, a life jacket is
mandatory.

While we will supply the necessary PPE (except safety boots) and ensure
you know how to use it correctly, it is your responsibility to wear it when
required:

Vehicle traffic is a hazard throughout the site. Your high-visibility apparel will
help increase your visibility, but due to the design of much of the mobile
equipment, there are blind spots.

The “driving circle” near the main office parking lot is an especially high traffic
area. Driving around the circle must be done counterclockwise only.

Walkways are marked as appropriate. Use them or the sidewalks whenever
possible.

Observe our speed limits in all areas of the site:

15 mph in plant areas.
25 mph on quarry and wharf access roads.

In all areas of the site, heavy equipment has the right-of-way.

Seat belt use is mandatory while operating any mobile equipment or
vehicle on site.

Observe the railroad crossings at north and south entrances. This is a main line
and train traffic will occur at any time.
When entering the site and a train is
crossing, do not back out onto Route 9W.

The area around the Stamler feeder in the secondary area can be very
dangerous due to falling rocks from the quarry belts:

If you need to enter the area
around the Stamler, contact
the control room.

All moving equipment and machinery on site is guarded:

Do not operate equipment if
guards are missing or removed.
If you need to remove a guard for
your task, ensure you replace it
when you are finished.

Compressed air is under extreme pressure. If it penetrates your body as a
bubble of air, the result could be fatal:

Never use compressed air
to blow off your clothing or
point it at anyone else.

Safe blow-down stations are located throughout the site:

Use these stations to blow off your clothing.

Air cannons, used to prevent buildups and improve the flow of the material,
are located throughout the plant. Areas where they are used will be identified
by signs:

The cannons will fire randomly — be aware of your surroundings in these
areas.

Some areas of the plant contain high temperatures and there is a potential risk
for heat stress when in them:
•

Make sure you stay hydrated — drink
plenty of the water provided.
If you notice any symptoms of heat
stress — dizziness, nausea, profuse
sweating, rapid pulse — leave the area
and notify your supervisor.
Always follow the “buddy system” when
in high temperature areas.

Hazards within a construction site, or in any area of the plant, must be
barricaded:

Lock out, tag out, try out, is an important element of our safety program.
Any work is required on or near any equipment that could move or be
caused to move, all energy sources need to be isolated, locked out
and tested . Energy sources include:

If a task involves working at height, a Fall Hazard Risk Assessment is
done and a Working at Height Permit is completed by Lafarge.

Some areas on the site are designated as enclosed or confined spaces.
An enclosed or confined space is defined as an area where there is limited
access, a danger of entrapment, or a possibility of a dangerous
atmosphere:

Conveyors are used throughout the site to transport materials. Conveyors
present several hazards and anyone working on a conveyor must be properly
trained. If you will be near conveyors, follow basic safe practices:
•

Report any missing or damaged guards immediately.
Stay clear of nip or pinch points where you could get entangled or pulled
in.
Always cross conveyors at designated crossing points – do not walk on or
under a conveyor.

We also use various types of piles for storage of raw and processed materials.
These piles – stockpiles and surge piles – are inherently unstable and present
several hazards.
•

Stockpiles are man-made and usually built in a conical or linear shape.
Surge piles are also man-made and are built directly over a powered
feeder or draw hole.
Pedestrian access is either prohibited or very limited on a stockpile or
surge pile.
Keep a safe distance of 10 m (33 ft) from the base of a stockpile or surge
pile.

Hazcom is a hazard communication program in effect across the United
States. Anyone working at our site must be trained in HAZCOM.

MSDS for all controlled products used at the plant are available online. Check
for the yellow posters posted throughout the site for instructions on how to
access them:

PPE requirements, etc. before using or
coming in contact with a controlled product.

The 100-Ton haul trucks have
right-of-way on the haul roads.
Due to the size of the trucks, the driver may
not see a person or vehicle in their path,
especially to the rear of the machine.
Always follow the posted speed limit of
25 mph on the haul and entrance roads:

By law, any person working inside the wharf restricted area must have a TWIC
card, or at least one person in a five-person crew must have the TWIC card.

With our close proximity to the Hudson River, we must follow sensitive area
protection procedures:

Do not drain water in or out of wetlands and other environmentally sensitive
areas, and do not place materials into wetlands.

Do not refuel equipment within 50' of a water body, wetland or storm drain.
