Carrier Strike Group
Expeditionary Strike Group
Ships typically deploy together as a group in either a
Carrier Strike Group or an Expeditionary Strike Group.

The Carrier Strike Group could be employed in a
variety of roles, all of which would involve the gaining
and maintenance of sea control:
 Protection of economic and/or military shipping.
 Protection of a Marine amphibious force while enroute to,
and upon arrival in, an amphibious objective area.
 Establishing a naval presence in support of national
interests.

Expeditionary Strike Group consist of
Amphibious Assault Ships that deploy in support of
US ground forces in remote locations.

F/A-18 C/D/E/F Hornet – An all-weather
aircraft used as an attack aircraft as well as
a fighter. In its fighter mode, used primarily
as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense;
in its attack mode, used for force
projection, interdiction and close and deep
air support.
EA-6B Prowler –Electronic warfare aircraft.
Provides airborne electronic attack
capability.
E2C Hawkeye –All-weather airborne early
warning, airborne battle management and
command and control functions. Also
surface surveillance coordination, air
interdiction, offensive and defensive
counter air control, close air support
coordination, time critical strike
coordination, search and rescue airborne
coordination and communications relay.
SH-60 Seahawk –Anti-submarine warfare,
search and rescue, drug interdiction, antiship warfare, cargo lift, and special
operations.

The ships of Military Sealift Command's Naval Fleet
Auxiliary Force (NFAF) are the lifeline to the U.S. Navy

(NECC), established in January 2006,
