• ASM emission test equipment tests the vehicle at two constant speeds and load levels
• 50% load at 15 mph (known as the 50/15 test)
• 25% load at 25 mph (known as the 25/25 test)
• High constant load at a relatively low speed
“simulates” acceleration.

• NOx relationship to air/fuel ratio (see attached material):
• Rich mixture (less than 14.7:1): NOx levels are low,
CO and HC are high.
• Stoichiometric mixture (14.7:1): HC & CO levels are acceptable, and NOx can be controlled.
• Lean Mixture (more than 14.7:1): NOx levels increase until just before 16:1 then decreases sharply due to a
LEAN MISFIRE which cools the cylinder with unburned fuel,
(CO decreases and HC increases)

• Proper 3-way catalytic converter operation requires a
STOICHIOMETRIC air/fuel ratio.

• Rich mixture: Converter cannot efficiently control CO and HC, NOx is controlled by excessive fueling (cools combustion temperature).
• Lean Mixture: Converter cannot efficiently control
NOx , Converter can control CO & HC.

Exact BAR 97 EIS prompts and procedures will vary by equipment manufacturer and software versions. Always follow manufacturer’s procedures and instructions when performing actual tests.

1. Perform all equipment warm-up procedures.
2. Perform all EIS equipment manufacturer’s required maintenance: Gas calibration, leak test etc..
3. Determine if the vehicle is all wheel drive (AWD) equipped: AWD, full-time four wheel drive, or
Non-disengageable TRACTION control.

4. Vehicle test weight: EIS will
WEIGH the vehicle’s drive axle.
5. EIS uses the measured weight of the drive axle and vehicle
INFORMATION database (VID) and vehicle
LOOK-UP table (VLT) to calculate correct load.

6. If the measured drive axle weight does not match (within set tolerances) VID/VLT data: EIS may ask the technician if the vehicle appears to have an excess load greater than 500 lbs. (a camper shell, a load of bricks, etc.).
A.
If the technician answers YES, the EIS will calculate proper load.
B. If the technician answers NO, the EIS may prompt to weigh the non-drive axle and will use the total measured weight to calculate the load.

A. The technician should

TEST OR WHEN TESTING A VEHICLE.

1. Follow the on-screen
PROMPTS when entering the data.
2. Enter all of the required technician and vehicle information data into the EIS:
A.
Uses both a bar code scanner and manual entry.
B. Most entries are similar to BAR 90 TAS entries.
C.
Follow published procedures and the
EQUIPMENT manufacturer’s instructions, as necessary.

3. Placing the vehicle on the dyno:
A.
Inspect the dyno rollers for fluid, rocks, etc. that could cause an unsafe condition.
B.
Place the vehicle’s
DRIVE WHEELS on the dyno scale following the manufacturer’s procedures for the equipment being used.
C.
Follow the on-screen prompts when
CENTERING the drive wheels on the rollers.
D.
Check vehicle/equipment clearance using manufacturer’s guideline to assure a safe testing condition.

Restrain the vehicle from foreward and
SIDEWAYS movement per manufacturer’s instructions:

1. Passive and/or automatic restraint system
(straps, rollers, wheel chocks)
2. Position side rollers within 5” of sidewall

6. Assure that all accessories are turned
OFF.
7. Assure that the vehicle is at operating temperature before placing on dyno.

8. Dry the tires as necessary:
A.
Follow the EIS prompts for drying the tires.
B.
Under 30 mph and specified rpm for the time prescribed by the EIS on-screen prompt.
9. Close the vehicle’s hood during the inspection.
NOTE: To ensure emissions test accuracy when performing either a smog certification or a baseline emissions test, the technician will not connect diagnostic test equipment to the vehicle.

1. BAR 97 pre-test requirements:
A.
EIS looks for the following conditions to be present before beginning the test sequence:
1. The sample dilution is within limits.
2. The EIS does not detect a
LOW FLOW condition.
3. The engine speed is between 400 &
1250 rpm.
4. The dyno rollers are not TURNING.
B. If the conditions are not met, the EIS will prompt the needed correction.

C.
If the conditions are met, the EIS will prompt “test can begin”.
2. Starting the 50/15 test mode (test mode I),
ACCELERATE the vehicle to 15 mph:
A.
Hold the speed steady as the EIS applies the load.
B. Maximum test duration of 100 seconds
C.
Once the 50/15 test is complete the EIS will prompt the technician to accelerate the vehicle to
25 mph.

D. Follow on-screen instructions to perform the
25/25 test (test mode 2)
3. If any UNSAFE condition occurs during the testing, abort the test immediately:
A.
Review abort conditions.
4. If, during any segment of the loaded mode test, conditions cause the vehicle to fall out of the set test parameters for a specified time, the EIS will display an error message requesting a test restart:

Restart parameters:
A.
Excessive ACCELERATION DURING 50/15
OR 25/25 TEST.
B.
Excessive or low vehicle speed (mph) during 50/15 or 25/25 test.
5. If the condition continues longer than allowed the EIS will prompt the technician to restart the test or abort the test.
6. When the test sequence is completed successfully, the
EIS will display “end of ASM emission test.”

OPTIONAL EMISSIONS TEST SEQUENCES:
1. Two speed (no load) idle test sequence used for trucks and motor homes with a GVWR of over __10000 lb._:
A. Determined by the VID from the data entered.

D. Perform gas cap tests.

MODE TESTING vs BAR 90 TESTING:

BASIC DIAGNOSTIC

1. Analysis of exhaust emissions noted on VIR, and
basic diagnostic approach.
2. Short overview of diagnostic flow chart application
(see flow chart handouts).

BAR 97 TRANSITION EXAM
Final Examination
1. Student must correctly answer 17 or more examination questions (out of 25) to pass the course.
Students must retake class if they fail.
2. Instructor may score examination in class.
BAR 97 LAB ASSIGNMENT
1. Student will perform (to teacher’s satisfaction) one
ASM emission test (loaded mode test only) on a vehicle already placed on a BAR 97 EIS.
