Le determinanti della diffusione di nuove tecnologie sanitarie p Un’analisi empirica Milano, 18 settembre 2014 Cergas and the European Health T h l Technology IInstitute tit t for f SocioS i Economic Research • In Phase 1, we investigated the impact of DRG tariffs on the diffusion of Drug Eluting Stents in Italian hospitals located in nine regions (Cappellaro et al., 2011). • IIn Phase Ph 2, 2 we investigated i ti t d th the role l off fi financing i mechanisms based on DRGs on the diffusion of new medical devices in Italian hospitals through qualitative analysis of semi semi-structured structured interviews to regional and hospital managers (Callea et al., 2014). • Phase 3 research p project j “The investigation g of determinants that impact the diffusion of innovative health technologies. An empirical analysis” aims at exploring the main determinants driving the diffusion of new medical di l devices d i iin th the It Italian li NHS NHS. 2 O Overall ll objectives bj ti off th the research h 1. Part 1 – The determinants of diffusion of medical innovation Aim: to identify the main variables that impact the diffusion of new medical devices at different levels of analysis (i.e. regional hospital, regional, hospital patient and product level) through a systematic literature review of empirical studies. 2. Part 2 - Technological innovation and coding practices State of the art in Italy Aim: to investigate the ability of the ICD-9-CM coding system currently used in Italy to link procedures to innovative medical technologies technologies, highlighting the limitations and developing possible recommendation on improvements. 3. Part 3 – Empirical analysis Aim: to estimate empirically what drives the diffusion of new medical technologies in the Italian hospital sector. 3
