professoriate. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass
4 types of scholarship
1. Discovery
2. Integration
3. Application
4. Teaching
• Integration
– Interpret use of knowledge across disciplines
• Collaborating with colleagues to design and deliver a
core course
• Coxal bone in Sketchfab in Anatomy
• Application
– Aid society and professions in addressing
problems
• Serving industry as an external consultant
– Student Capstone/applied research projects
• Teaching*
– Study teaching models and practices to achieve
optimal learning
• Developing and testing instructional materials
• Coxal bone in Sketchfab
What are best practices that you are incorporating in
your teaching/curriculum delivery?
Innovation and Applied Research
Innovation
1. Webster online: A new idea, method or device.
2. Peter Drucker: Change that creates a new dimension of performance.
3. Joseph Schumpeter: The introduction of new goods, new methods of production,
the opening of new markets, the conquest of new sources of supply and the carrying out
of a new organization of any industry.
Applied Research
1. Association of Canadian Community Colleges 2011: Applied Research has the
potential to introduce new products or processes which can increase productivity,
preserve or create jobs, contribute to the growth of a company, thus supporting
community and regional development.
2. Government of Canada: Work undertaken to advance scientific knowledge with a
specific practical application in view. This type of research advances the current
understanding of scientific principles, methodologies or relations.
3. OECD 2012: Applied research is original investigation undertaken in order to
acquire new knowledge. It is, however, directed primarily towards a specific
practical aim or objective.
