Supporting Engagement
in Open Access:
a Publishers Perspective

Remaining Relevant
Thinking Differently About
Publishing
Engaging Our Community
• We share the view that increased access to the results of
research is necessary to maximize their use and impact.
• As a thought-leader in the OA environment and strong
supporter of the Gold OA route, the RSC is encouraging
funding to be made available to support authors during the
transition from reader to author-side payments.
• The Gold route for OA publishing is not without problems,
particularly around sources of funding and the current Article
Publication Charge (APC) process.
• The RSC recognized the difficulties being faced by the
chemical science community in this challenging transitional
period. With recent mandates from funding bodies and
research councils in many countries and regions,
Gold For Gold
•
We recognize that researchers are
often being asked to publish Open
Access (OA), but do not have the
funding to pay for it directly.
•
To support the funder-led evolution
to Gold OA our Gold for Gold
initiative rewards all institutions that
subscribe to RSC Gold with
voucher codes to make papers
available via OA, free of charge.
•
Gold for Gold ensures academics
can further increase the visibility
of their quality research, whilst
raising their institution's reputation.
Chemical Sciences Repository

•
•
•
Subject-based repository that
will make it easier for researchers
to find and share relevant journal
articles and data from a single
point of access
The repository, will point to the
Article of Record as the primary
source. It will make open access
versions of the article available
when any embargo period
expires. .
Authors will have to opt-in for
automatic deposition, but this
author service will allow them to
easily fulfill their obligations to
their funders, if mandated to do
so.
CHORUS http://chorusaccess.org/
•
•
•
The Clearinghouse for the Open
Research of the United States
(CHORUS) is a not-for-profit publicprivate partnership to increase
public access to peer-reviewed
publications that report on federally
funded research.
Conceived by publishers, CHORUS
will :provide a full solution for
agencies to comply with the
OSTP memo on public access to
peer-reviewed scientific publications
reporting on federally-funded
research
Build on publishers’ existing
infrastructure to enhance public
access to research literature,
avoiding duplication of effort,
minimizing cost to the government
and ensuring the continued
availability of the research literature

ChemSpider http://www.chemspider.com/
•
•
ChemSpider is a free chemical
structure database providing
fast text and structure search
access to over 29 million
structures from hundreds of
data sources. properties and
associated information.
By integrating and linking
compounds from more than 400
data sources, ChemSpider
enables researchers to discover
the most comprehensive view of
freely available chemical data
from a single online search.
National Chemical Database
Service
•
•
The National Chemical Database Service offers access to a
suite of commercial databases and resources, with additional
development to create a chemistry data repository to take
place.
All UK academic institutions are eligible for access to the
service,

A unique partnership between the
European Community and the
European Federation of
Pharmaceutical Industries
To reduce the barriers to drug
discovery in industry, academia
and for small businesses,
the Open PHACTS consortium is
building the Open PHACTS
Discovery Platform.
This will be freely available,
integrating pharmacological data
from a variety of information
resources and providing tools and
services to question this integrated
data to support pharmacological
research.
