Painting has been a popular form of art for
many hundreds of years. Some of the world’s
oldest paintings were made thousands of years
ago in caves in France. These paintings show
animals like bears, panthers, horses, and
rhinos.
The paintings may have been used to tell a
story. They might have been used to keep a
record of the animals that the people hunted.
Or maybe the people who made them thought
the paintings would help to them hunt the
animals. No one knows for sure why they
made these paintings. But they are works of art!

were dangerous. They could even be deadly.
Bones were often broken and athletes
sometimes died. Some of these games might
seem cruel to us. But to the ancient Greeks,

come to mind. But did you know that fish aren’t
the only animals that live in rivers? Rivers are

alligators make their home in rivers.
Amphibians such as frogs and toads live in
rivers too. Many mammals such as
beavers, hippos, and river dolphins make
their homes in rivers. Rivers are full of life.
