Data Compression methods
Read pages 272 -273 of the text, then answer the following:
 What is data compression used for?
 Name two hardware devices that sometimes have data
compression built-in.
 Name the two main methods used to compress digital
data and briefly describe the features of each.
 Name a program that uses each method of data
compression.
 Would you use lossy compression to reduce the size
and transmission time of a very large word-processed
document, spreadsheet or database? Explain why or
why not.
Data transmission methods
There are two different ways of sending binary data
between computers, or between computers and other
devices (such as printers, scanners, etc).
Text Activity (pg 272):
 Name the two methods of binary data transmission.
 Describe how the binary data travels in each method.
 Draw a simple diagram of each method.
 List the advantages of serial data transmission over
parallel.
 When is it appropriate to use parallel over serial?
Bitmapped and Vector Graphics

and Draw software.
3. From the programs listed on the previous
slide, name the
a) Paint programs
b) Draw programs
4. Answer Think questions 3 & 4 from page 97,
Ware textbook.
Manipulating graphics data
 Techniques used to manipulate graphics include:




Resizing
Cropping
Special effects
Rendering
Use pages 102-105 of the text to describe these techniques,
