Supranationalism
What is supranationalism?
 Supranationalism occurs when 3 or more
states agree to cooperate under a large
organization they create together.
 For supranationalism to work, the states
must agree to give up some power and
follow this organization.
 This is possible because of centripetal
forces: events and issues that bring states
together.
Question?
 What are examples of events or
issues have brought nations together
to cooperate?
What are the types of centripetal forces?
 Shared military goals create supranational
organizations like NATO.
 NATO was orginaly created to protect Western
Europe from the communist military alliance of the
Warsaw Pact in East Europe.
 Shared political goals create supranational
organizations like the United Nations.
 League of Nations was the first after WWI, but the
U.S. and other countries didn’t join, so it failed.
 It did create an Permanent Court of Int’l Justice and also
the Law of the Sea for ocean boundaries.
 U.N. was created after WWII to prevent war.
 Shared economic goals create supranational
organizations like NAFTA or the European Union
 NAFTA is an agreement between U.S., Mexico and
Canada to not tax each other.
What is the purpose of the E.U.?
 European Union is an economic
supranational organization that seeks
to help its members (states) develop.
 Free trade and open borders between
states
 Most use the same currency: the euro
 Common agricultural and industrial policies
 Richer countries help poorer ones
 The E.U. is the world’s richest market.
