Liquid Vials
To begin, make sure you have the proper supplies: vial
of solution, syringe and needle assembly, and alcohol
pad.
(NEED TO ADD ALCOHOL PAD TO THIS PIC)
Remove dust cover from vial.
Open alcohol pad.
Wipe rubber stopper with alcohol pad.
Avatar: Be sure to allow the alcohol to dry. The desiccant effect of the
evaporated alcohol is what destroys most microorganisms.
Pull an amount of air a
little less than or equal to
the amount of medication
needed from the vial.
Tip: Remember, do not
remove the cap yet.
Uncap the needle.
AIR SHOULD BE IN THIS SYRINGE SO THE PLUNGER SHOULD BE PULLED
BACK TO AN AMT EQUAL TO THE MED NEEDED FROM THE VIAL
Place the needle tip on the rubber stopper with the bevel facing up.
The needle is to be held at a slight angle.

This needle is at too much of an angle and bent.

Puncture the rubber stopper by pressing down on the angled needle
pushing the needle straight into the vial.
Inject the air in the syringe into the vial.
Pull solution from the vial into the syringe.
The positive pressure created by the injected the air should make it easier to
pull solution from the vial.
What’s wrong with this situation?
Holding vial incorrectly…
Withdraw the amount of solution needed from the vial
Make sure to keep the needle in the solution or you will get air bubbles.
Inject any air bubbles back into the vial.
Withdraw the needle from the vial.
Recap the needle.
