You will learn IELTS speaking and listening. Listening Focus: > listen for the main idea (what am I talking about?) > listen for relevant information (what do you need to remember?) > understand the speaker's opinion (what is my feeling about something?) > understand the speaker's intention (what do I mean? What3 do I want?) Speaking Focus: > try to speak fluently > try to use advanced vocabulary > try to use advanced grammar > try to use good pronunciation understand you?) (speak well. Can I understand you?) (are you using new words when you speak?) (are you using new grammar when you speak?) (are you pronouncing words correctly? Can I Speaking and Listening will be focused on IELTS stages 1, 2 and 3 Stage 1: very easy, a general question Ex: Do you live in a big or a small family? Stage 2: a little difficult, a description question Ex: Please describe one of your family members Stage 3: very difficult, a discussion Ex: What has changed in Chinese families recently? 4 What will you do in this class? Listening homework You will listen to the CD at home and report on it the next class. You will talk about what you listened to and I will ask you questions. 2. Speaking in class work 1 You will prepare a short 3 minute speech about a topic that I give you every week. You will talk about it in class and I will ask you questions 3. Speaking homework 2 You must give a talk in front of the whole class every 2 weeks. 10 Grading: The grading scale is about: 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69%=D 11 Points: Class attendance – 10% student can miss only 1 class. 2 lates = 1 absence Coursework – 50% : participation – 10% speaking homework – 10% listening homework – 10% speaking test – 10% (week 5) listening test – 10% (week 5) Session End Exam – 40% = Listening – 20% Speaking – 20% 12 How do I get a good grade? To get an A, you will need to: > Come to class > Be on time > Do your homework > Practice your speaking homework before class > Do your homework on time > Participate in class > Read your textbooks > Study your textbooks > Study for tests > Practice speaking for tests > Ask me if you have any questions 13 Deadlines (due dates) Hand in your assignments at the beginning of class. If it is handed in later it will be counted as late. Week 4 15 Course Policies: This course follows the UK program. Check the website for more details. Attendance Policy: – You may have 1 unexcused absences. After this, your grade will go down. For example an A- becomes a B+ – Being late to class 2 times (more than five minutes late) is the same as one absence. 16 Late Work: If your work is turned in late it will go down by one-half grade for each class period missed. For example a B becomes a C+ if your assignment is turned in one course late. Plagiarism: – Do your original work – . Don't copy from your classmates 17 What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is stealing another person's ideas. Examples of Plagiarism: – Word for word (exact) copying of another person's ideas or words – Paraphrase copying (rewriting, but the idea is still another person's) – Submission of another person's work as your own (adding your name to another person's essay) ) Exception: common knowledge 18 Code of Conduct: Be nice. Treat other students with respect. Make everyone feel comfortable. No talking while the professor is talking. Please Note: – – – No cell phones (mobile phones) No MP3 Players No Laptops – you won't need them. – Bring in your notebook. 19 Short Activity: I want to get to know your names. (this is your class participation.) I also want to hear about your IELTS score. I will speak to you one by one. Hints: Where are you from? What did you do for the summer break? Who did you meet? What is famous in your hometown? What is your IELTS score? 20 New Words: Speaking Book (Green Book) p. 105-106 Words about people. Use the new words: metropolis country industrial city small town ancient city historical city medium-sized city tourism city Where is your hometown like? What do you do there? Is it a big city or a small town? What is the local famous food or craft? Is there some interesting history? 22 IELTS Video 1: Watch the video. Her topic is hometown. Hints: Try to answer each question for at least 1 minute. Speak clearly. You know your topic, so you can practice. 23 24
