4/13/2015 1 An understanding and appreciation of the Holy Spirit is important, we need to make sure we understand why the Holy Spirit: 4/13/2015 2 4/13/2015 3 THE PROMINENCE OF THE SPIRIT IN "THE BIBLE" 4/13/2015 4 The Old Testament mentions the Holy Spirit 88 times. 4/13/2015 5 23 books in the Old Testament refer to the Holy Spirit. Although the actual expression "Holy Spirit" is used only 3 times 4/13/2015 6 For Example Psalm 51:11 “Don't toss me aside, banished forever from your presence. Don't take your Holy Spirit from me.” 4/13/2015 7 Other expressions referring to the Spirit are used "the Spirit of God" 4/13/2015 8 For example Genesis 1:2 “The earth was a shapeless, chaotic mass, with the Spirit of God brooding over the dark vapours” 4/13/2015 9 The New Testament. mentions the Holy Spirit 264 times 4/13/2015 10 4/13/2015 60 or more references in the gospels 11 The Book of Acts has 57 references (which is why some call it "The Acts Of The Holy Spirit") The epistles refer to the Holy Spirit 132 times 4/13/2015 12 4/13/2015 13 4/13/2015 14 Elizabeth Zacharias Simeon 4/13/2015 15 4/13/2015 16 4/13/2015 17 4/13/2015 18 HIS INVOLVEMENT IN OUR BECOMING CHRISTIANS... 4/13/2015 19 We are convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit. John 16:7 -8 But I am telling you the truth; if I leave, it is really better for you. If I don‘t leave, the Comforter won't come to you. However, if I go away, I will send Him He will prove that the people of the world are wrong about sin, wrong about what is right, and wrong about judgment: 4/13/2015 20 We are "born again” of the Spirit John 3:5-8 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So is it with every one who has been born of the Spirit." 4/13/2015 21 We are "renewed" of the Holy Spirit Titus 3:4-6 But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour for humanity were revealed, then He saved us--not because we were good enough to be saved, but because of His kindness and pity--by washing away our sins and giving us the new joy of the indwelling Holy Spirit whom He poured out upon us with wonderful fullness--and all because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did. 4/13/2015 22 We are “indwelt" of the Holy Spirit Romans 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 4/13/2015 23 Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 4/13/2015 24 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 4/13/2015 25 HIS PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES AS CHRISTIANS... We "live in the Spirit" Galatians 5:25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let our behaviour be guided by the Spirit. 4/13/2015 26 We are to "walk in the Spirit", producing the "fruit of the Spirit" Galatians 5:22-23 But when we allow the Holy Spirit to control our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law. 4/13/2015 27 We must set our minds on "the things of the Spirit" Romans 8:5-6 Those who let themselves be controlled by their lower natures live only to please themselves, but those who follow after the Holy Spirit find themselves doing those things that please God. Following after the Holy Spirit leads to life and peace, but following after the old nature leads to death. 4/13/2015 29 It is "by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body" Romans 8:11-13 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as He raised Christ from the dead, He will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you. Therefore, brethren, it is not to our lower natures that we are under obligation that we should live by their rule. For if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die, but if by the Spirit you continually put to death the activities of the body, you will live. 4/13/2015 30 HIS PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES AS CHRISTIANS... Only when "led by the Spirit" are we truly the "sons of God" All who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God; 4/13/2015 31 The Holy Spirit "makes intercession for us" in our prayers The Holy Spirit helps us with our daily problems and in our praying. For we don't even know what we should pray for, nor how to pray as we should; but the Holy Spirit prays for us with such feeling that it cannot be expressed in words and he who can see into all hearts knows what the Spirit means because the prayers that the Spirit makes for God's holy people are always in accordance with the mind of God. 4/13/2015 32 God strengthens us "with might through His Spirit" in the inner man. Ephesians 3:16 I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will give you mighty inner strength through His Holy Spirit. 4/13/2015 33 Thus we can enjoy the "communion (fellowship) of the Spirit" May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you! 4/13/2015 34 Thus we can enjoy the "communion (fellowship) of the Spirit" If then I can appeal to you as the followers of Christ, if there is any persuasive power in love and any common sharing of the Spirit, or if you have any tenderheartedness and compassion, make my joy complete by being of one mind 4/13/2015 35
