TOPIC SENTENCE
“Open the door”
►
Tells the reader what the paragraph is about.
TOPIC: Pencil is the best tool to write with.
DO NOT WRITE:
This paragraph is about how a pencil is the best tool to write with.
My paragraph is about how the pencil is the best tool to write with
compared to a pen.
INSTEAD TRY:
A pencil is the best tool to write with. OR
Pencils are the best tools to write with in any occasion.
SUPPORTING DETAILS
“What’s inside?”
Supports the topic sentence.
► Usually examples or facts.
Example:
A pencil is a better tool with which to write. For example, if
►
a writer makes a mistake with a pencil, it is easily erased
and rewritten.
A pencil is a better tool with which to write. Studies show
that pencils are used more efficiently compared to pens.
COMMENTARY
“Explain more”
► Gives
explanation of the details.
A pencil is a better tool with which to write.
For example, if a writer makes a mistake with a
pencil, it is easily erased and rewritten. This
makes it more convenient for the writer to make
revisions to what they are writing. Studies also
show that pencils are used more efficiently
compared to pens. When test subjects wrote
essays, they made 20% fewer mistakes compared
to the 80% mistakes made with pens.
Closing sentence
“Close the door”
►
►
Closes the idea (Shut the door!!)
Sometimes transitions into the next paragraph idea.
A pencil is a better tool with which to write. For
example, if a writer makes a mistake with a pencil, it is
easily erased and rewritten. This makes it more convenient
for the writer to make revisions to what they are writing.
Studies also show that pencils are used more efficiently
compared to pens. When test subjects wrote essays, they
made 20% fewer mistakes compared to the 80% mistakes
made with pens. Perhaps students should convince
teachers that the pencil is the best tool for essay writing
and allow them to use it rather than requiring a pen.
