Recovery is possible for everyone, centrality o f hope c). Self-determination (dignity of choice) is vital especially for persons in crisis d). Connecting on a mutually respectful emotional level e). Validity o f emotional expression f). Cultural attune ment and inclusion across diverse groups g). Every citizen is appreciated as a healthy pe rson ins ide who has encountered trau ma 7 8 C=Connecting Connecting is the most challenging of the 3 elements Connecting is a matter of trust, sensitivity, and focused attention In practice, connecting looks a lot like listening 9 C=Connecting Communicating with the person at an emotional level Listening with your heart, empathetically, with concern Tuning in nonjudgmentally Showing and feeling genuine concern, hope, and compassion Encourage persons to express feelings 10 11 P = emPowerment As the individual in emotional crisis begins to feel safe and is able to speak it is important that they begin planning for a return to life in the community. Surviving emotional crisis resembles recovery from illness in many ways The personÕslife is dramatically disrupted for a period Sooner or later things return to something like ÒnormalÓ 12 13 P = emPowerment ItÕscrucial that the planning stage be focused on specifics. Ask the person to consider: What do I want my life to look like? What can I do to take good care of myself? WhatÕs ht e next important thing I can do now? 14 15 16 What we bring to helping people recover from e-crisis is our interior experience. 17
