men’s clothes are less elaborate
then woman clothes? Woman

special ceremonies. Men wear
shenyi’s to different places .Their

Chinese Clothing for Men
Chinese men have been less fashion
conscious than their women throughout the
history of the country. This does not mean that
they did not have a particular dress sense. The
most basic Chinese clothing for men has a long
robe. This long robe was a prominent part of
culture of China. This can be judged by the fact
that many men sport a modernized version of
the traditional Chinese long robe even today.
Such robes are reserved for special occasions like
weddings or cultural celebrations.
Ceremony Costumes
In China, there can be special
ceremonies. People wear
Pienfu’s, which is a type of
costume for certain
ceremonies. Pienfu’s are a
special type of robe which is
very comfortable to wear for
ceremonies.
POPULAR TRADITIONAL CHINESE DRESSES
Sheni
This unique dress was sort of a modification of the Pien Fu. It
was a two section dress that consisted of a tunic as well as a
skirt. The unique thing about the dress was that both these
items were stitched together to become one long suit. Hence, on
its appearance it looked a lot like the traditional Chinese long
robe.
Laws for Clothing in Ancient China
The Manchu Qing dynasty in many ways represented
a cultural rupture in the past, as Manchu clothing styles were
required to be worn by the noblemen and officials. The Qing
first implemented queue laws that required the populace to
get Manchu hairstyles and clothes –or face execution.
Eventually this style became widespread among the
commoners, a new style of dress, called Tangzhuang,
included the changshan worn by men and the qipao worn by
women. Manchu official headwear differed from the Ming
version, but Qing continued to use the Mandarin Square.
RULES OF CLOTHES
There were many rules around colors and who got to wear
what type of clothes. Only certain people like high ranked
officials and members of the emperor’s court were able to
wear sink. Lower ranked people wear cotton because it is
cheap, warm, and soft and if they wear silk they will be
punished.

COLORS
There were also rules on what colors
people were able to wear. Only the
emperor could wear yellow. During the
Sui Dynasty poor people were only
allowed to wear blue or black clothing.
The color of clothing also symbolized
emotions. White clothing is worn when
someone has died and red was worn to
show joy and happiness.
ADORMENT AND JEWELRY
Jewelry and adornment were an important
part of fashion. Not only was it used to look
good, but they were also used to signify rank.
There were many specific rules about who
could wear what, especially for men so
people can know their status. The most
important jewelry for men was their belt
hook or buckle. These could be highly
decorated and made of gold or bronze.
Women wore a lot of jewelry in their hair
such as combs and hairpins.

HAIRSTYLES
Hair was considered very important during ancient china.
Men tied their hair into a knot on top of their head and
covered it with a square cloth or a hat. Women braided and
coiled up their hair in different styles and then decorated it
with hairpins. Girls were not allowed to coil up their hair with
hairpins until they were married.
Clothing of Chinese Women
The Cheongsam
This Cheongsam is the most popular
Chinese dress for women. It is a dress that
was developed a long time ago and has
come into fashion in modified form today.
The Cheongsam is a one-piece dress suit
that is tightly wrapped around the body. The
Chinese also have a male counterpart for
this dress known as the Changshan.
Although this unique dress is native to the
country of china in recent years it has
become popular amongst the global
community.
Old And New Chinese Clothes
In China way back Chinese
people wore traditional clothes but
now Chinese people wear clothes
like us now in America. Here are a
couple of examples- Jeans and Tshirts and other American stuff. It
seems that in some parts of China
has lost it’s specialty. Not all parts of
China. Some of China is just like
