Bell Ringer 9/3/13 1. What is the function of a hot plate? 2. Which science tool would you use for accurate volume measurement?(2 possible answers) 3. List something that you organize or need to organize 4. Besides by grade how are schools organized? Level of organization in plants Cells (smallest level) Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organisms (highest level) Levels of organization Cells form tissues Tissues form organs Organs form systems Organ systems form organisms such as a single plant Living Things A living thing is an organism. You are a multicellular organism! -This means you are made of many cells -Animals and Plants are multicellular organisms Plants- Are living things, they need soil, water, air and sunlight to live. What are living things? Most living things share certain characteristics. What characteristics do humans share? We all have basic needs for food, water, a place to live, and oxygen. We are all made up of cells Cells All organisms are made of cells. A cell is the smallest unit of living matter; the basic unit of life. You are made of blood cells, bone cells, skin cells, and many others. A plant also has different cells in its roots, stems, and leaves. Many-Celled Organisms have different types of cells… Plants have: Leaf Cells Root Cells Stem Cells Tissues: In your body, a single skin cell or blood cell does not work alone. Cells work together in groups called tissues. A tissue -is a group of similar cells that work together carrying out a certain job. For example, skin cells work together as skin tissue that covers and protects your body. Other kinds of tissue in an animal’s body include muscle, bone, nerve and blood. Tissues Plant cells are also organized into tissues. The Tissues of a plant are: Xylem- carries water from roots to leaves (located in the stem) Phloem- transports the sugars(food) and other molecules created by the plant. (located in the stem) Organs Throughout your body, tissues are grouped together so they can work together. An organ is a group of tissues that work together doing certain jobs. Organs In a plant are 1) Leaf 2) Stem 3) Roots Plant organs A leaf -Make food for the plant using water, sunlight and air. A stem-Holds the plant up and carries water to the leaves and flowers. The roots- Hold the plant in the ground. They absorb all the nutrients the plant needs to grow. Organ Systems When a group of parts work together, they form a system. organ system-A group of organs working together to perform a particular function Example: Your digestive system is an organ system: It contains your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and liver. Digestion breaks down food and absorbs nutrients you need to live. Plant Organs System The shoot system is above ground and includes the organs such as leaves, buds, stems, flowers (if the plant has any), and fruits (if the plant has any). The root system includes those parts of the plant below ground Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems A cell is the smallest unit of living matter; the building blocks of living things. Tissues are groups of cells working together to perform a certain job. Organs are groups of tissues that perform a certain function. organ system: Organs working together to carry out a certain life function are an ORGANISM METAPHOR: Create a metaphor for an organism and explain its four levels of organization. Students can also illustrate their metaphor to further reinforce the concept. For example, if the organism is DISD then an organ system might be the (insert school name), an organ might be a classroom, a tissue could be a teacher, and cells could be the students. Other organisms could be Major League Baseball, a farm, a factory, a country, or any other complex system. DOL #4 9/2/13 1. In multicellular organisms, cells are arranged into groups that work together to perform a common function. What are these groups called? A. Systems B. Bones C. Tissues D. Joints 4. Like animals, plants have organ systems that perform specific functions. What are the organ systems in plants? 5. Which of the following best describes an organ? A. A group of cells that work together to perform a specific job B. A group of tissues that belong to different systems C. A structure made up of a group of 2. Xylem is a tissue True or False? tissues that work together to perform a specific job 3.What is the function of a stem? D. A body structure, such as muscles and lungs
