ETHNIC MINORITIES,
DISABILITY AND
OLDER PEOPLE –
LESSON 20
DISCRIMINATION – TO MAKE A
DISTINCTION – TO GIVE UNFAIR
TREATMENT – ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF
PREJUDICE AND WHEN THIS ATTITUDE
IS ACTED UPON.
TASK………..

OLD PEOPLE
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS, IMPACT OF SOCIAL AND
CULTURAL FACTORS AND POSSIBLE MEASURES TO
INCREASE PARTICIPATION AND SPORTING EXCELLENCE.
THIS COULD BE DONE IN THE FORM OF A TABLE
ELDERLY – BENEFITS, INFLUENCES AND MEASURES TO
INCREASE
DISABILITIES – PROBLEMS AND ADVANTAGE AND DIS. OF
INTEGRATION AND SEPARATION.
ETHNIC – DISCRIMINATION AND POSSIBLE MEASURES.

ETHNIC MINORITIES – SHOW VIDEO ON RACE
SOME ISSUES
BRITIAN IS A MULTI-CULTURAL AND MULTI-RACIAL
SOCIETY
THIS AFFECTS SPORTING NEEDS, OPPORTUNITY AND
PROVISION
RACISM STEMS FROM PREJUDICE LINKED WITH POWER OF
ONE RACIAL GROUP OVER ANOTHER
ALTHOUGH ILLEGAL, DISCRIMINATION STILL EXISTS ON
THE GROUNDS OF COLOUR, LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL
DIFFERENCES
DISCUSS EXAMPLES OF WHERE THERE IS ETHNIC
DISCRIMINATION IN SPORT AND SUGGEST SOME
SOLUTIONS OF HOW THEY COULD BE RESOLVED – REFER
TO P292
SPORT, ABILITY AND DISABILITY


DO DISABILITY GROUPS HAVE A FAIR
SHARE OF SPORTING
OPPORTUNITIES? WHAT IS BEING
DONE TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION?

OUR TASK IS TO RECOGNISE
SOURCES OF DISCRIMINATION AND
TO IDENTIFY MEASURES THAT HAVE
BEEN OR COULD BE TAKEN TO
BRING ABOUT FAIRER OPPORTUNITY
AND PROVISION FOR PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES.








WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES OF INTEGRATION AND
SEPARATION ( IN SCHOOLS)
IDENTIFY THE MAIN ISSUES, THEN DISCUSS
WHAT CAN BE DONE UNDER THE HEADINGS:
AWARENESS
ATTITUDES
ACCESS
FUNDING
ADAPTATION AND MODIFICATION
SCHOOL PE PROGRAMMES




SOME ISSUES:
BECAUSE OF LIMITED STATE BENEFITS THEY
ARE FINANCIALLY DISADVANTAGED THEREFORE
AFFECTING PARTICIPATION LEVELS.
THE ISSUE IS TO RECOGNISE THE MODERNISED
VERSIONS OF THE SPORTS AND APPRECIATE THE
TALENTS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS
SIX MILLION OF THE BRITISH POPULATION HAVE
SOME FORM OF SENSORY, PHYSICAL OR MENTAL
IMPAIRMENT – THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT
NEEDS.



THERE ARE CURRENTLY SEVEN
NATIONAL DISABILITY SPORTS
ASSOCIATIONS.
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES HAVE BEEN
CONSIDERED AS DEPENDENT AND
PASSIVE RATHER THAN INDEPENDENT
AND SELF-GOVERNING.
ORGANISATIONS, WHICH ARE
DEVELOPED BY AND FOR NON-DISABLED
PEOPLE, ARE NOW SEEN AS THE MAIN
SOURCES OF DISCRIMINATION.



BULILDING ON ABILITY WAS THE 1989
GOVERNMENT REPORT, WHOSE NAME CLEARLY
IDENTIFIES THE NEED TO EMPHASISE ABILITIES
RATHER THAN DISABILITIES AND TO CRUSH
MYTHS, FEARS OF IGNORANCE. THERE AIMS
WERE:
TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION BY PEOPLE WITH
DISABILITIES AT ALL LEVELS OF THE
PERFORMANCE PYRAMID
TO ENSURE EQUALITY OF ACCESS TO FACILITIES,
COMPETITIONS, TRAINING AND COACHING.






THEY WERE GOING TO ACHIEVE THESE
AIMS BY:
INTEGRATION
SPECIALIST TRAINING FOR COACHES
ADEQUATE PROVISION OF FACILITIES AT
LOCAL LEVEL
THE PROMOTION OF POSITIVE IMAGES OF
DISABLED SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN.
AS A RESULT MUCH PROGRESS HAS BEEN
MADE – SHIFT TOWARDS INCLUSION
RATHER THAN EXCLUSION.





ACCESS IMPROVED
IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY
IMPROVED TRAINING AND
COACHING
SPECIALIST SPORTS CENTRES
THE PARALYMPICS






MORE CAN BE DONE THROUGH:
RAISING AWARENESS
ATTITUDES AND MYTHS NEED TO BE
CONFRONTED
ACCESS NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED
FUNDING NEEDS TO IMPROVE
ADAPTION AND MODIFICATION OF
MAJOR GAMES SO THEY CAN BE
PLAYED


WHAT ABOUT PE IN SCHOOLS?
But not everybody in disability sport wants to, or
indeed could, compete at these levels. There's
more to it than that. Disability sport is about
creating opportunities and making sport
accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability.
It's about enabling and encouraging disabled
people to take part in sport simply for fun and
enjoyment, whether that sport be tennis, sailing,
horseriding, archery or scuba diving.
WHAT ABOUT OLDER PEOPLE?


WHAT ARE THE MAIN ISSUES? WHY
SHOULD OLD PEOPLE DO SPORT?
WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS?








SOME ISSUES:
OLDER PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES
AND PROVISION AS THE YOUNGER GENERATION – THE
MEDIA PORTRAYS THE IMAGE THAT SPORT IS FOR YOUNG
PEOPLE.
THEY NEED TO BE ENCOURAGED TO STAY ACTIVE EVEN
WHEN THEIR PERFORMANCE LEVELS DECLINE
OLDER PEOPLE ON LOWER INCOME IN TURN PRODUCES
LIMITATIONS TO PARTICIPATION.
ADVANTAGES INCLUDE:
HEALTH BENEFITS
SOCIAL BENEFITS
PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

SOCIAL CULTURAL FACTORS AND
THE MEDIA INFLUENCE. WHAT ARE
THE POSSIBE MEASURES TO
INCREASE PARTICIPATION ? OPPORTUNITIES, PROVISION AND
ESTEEM









PROBLEMS INCLUDE:
MYTH THAT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS FOR THE
YOUNG
NOT SO MANY COACHES AND LEADERS FOR THIS
AGE
SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE
RESTRICTED OR UNAPPEALING PROGRAMMES
LIMITED MONEY AND TRANSPORT
LIMITED EXPERIENCE OF SOME OF THE
OFFERED SPORTS
DIFFICULT TO BECOME ACTIVE
LIMITED ROLE MODELS


YOUNG PEOPLE
MANY YOUNG PEOPLE WHEN THEY
LEAVE SCHOOL FAIL TO TAKE UP
REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
SCHOOL LEAVERS NEED TO HAVE A
POSITIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
EXPERIENCE.
