Literacy • READING Reading is an immensely important part of our day. • Daily Reading • Children will be instructed in all genres from fantasy to realistic fiction, nonfiction and expository text. Students will be reading more texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including Social Studies and Science. Each night, students are expected to read a book of his or her choice at home. Students should read for a minimum of 20 minutes every night. Daily reading is a time for reading strategies and comprehension skills to be practiced and for students to enjoy reading. Writing • Writing is a critical part of a balanced literacy program. Our Writer’s Workshop begins with a mini-lesson focusing on a specific skill or strategy. Ultimately, we want all children to see themselves as authors. • Words Their Way- is word study for phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction. • It involves doing things with words like examining, manipulating, comparing and categorizing. It offers students the opportunity to make their own discoveries about how words work! Handwriting • In 1st grade, students are expected to use print throughout the school year. Trails West uses the ZanerBloser style of handwriting. It is important for students to learn and use correct formation of letters. Math • In Mathematics, teachers will concentrate on teaching a more focused set of math concepts and skills. • Students will engage in rich and challenging math content connected to real-world problem solving in order to inspire a greater interest in mathematics. Science & Social Studies • • • Correlates with the Cherry Creek College and Career Framework. Units are integrated within core subject areas. Students will be provided with many opportunities to become actively engaged in learning through hands-on activities, experiments, and field trips.
