My Definition of Teaching

The art of defining and communicating
the basic knowledge, skills and mental
models necessary to understand,
evaluate, discuss and create/
compose within a specific discipline (e.g.
history, biology, accounting, marketing,
music, etc.).
Course and Lesson Planning

Determine your role as an instructor,
coach, facilitator, or learning director.
Set the objectives at the level of the
course.
Define the key knowledge, skills and
mental models.
Select appropriate learning methodologies.
Formulate fair assessments.
Communicate at every
stage of the course.

downloading from the Internet.
FULL-TIME FACULTY ADVISORS AND
ADMINISTRATORS SHOULD BE
INFORMED AND LEFT TO HANDLE THESE
ISSUES.

Students should be reported to the Dean, so
that recording system can work.
TECHNOLOGY STATEMENT/POLICY

Personal electronics (e.g., laptops, iPads, cell
phones) can be used to enhance learning and
instruction in a variety of ways, but during class
time they should be used only for class-related
activities. Texting and the use of other electronic
devices for non-class-related activities should be
reserved for class break times. Additionally, with
permission of the instructor, audio and/or video
recordings may be used for your individual learning,
but cannot be distributed to others without the
instructor’s permission.
Grading and Feedback








When grading assigned work…give it back next
session.
Develop a grading plan for each assignment to
ensure consistency and fairness.
Don’t feel you have to grade everything!
Show how to apply the theories from class.
Deal with unhappy students in private on a one-toone basis.
Try to make comments, notes and corrections in a
positive way.
Be honest about poor or incomplete work.
Final Grades – do not email grades before you
have posted them to Access Maryville.
Grading Scheme
(100 point scale)
A = 94 - 100 A- = 90 - 93
B+ = 86 - 89 B = 83 - 85
B- = 80 - 82
C+ = 76 - 79 C = 73 - 75
C- = 70 - 72
D = 60 - 70
F = 59
or less

Notes on Final Grades

D is earned credit, but not for required courses in the major.
Graduate Only: Limited number of C grades in graduate work.
I – Incomplete: allowed for unforeseen life challenges only.
DG – Graduate course not completed due to exceptional circumstances
AF – Failing due to excessive absences.
NE – Not eligible, used when I or DG time has expired –no effect on GPA.
W – Student withdrew from course, no effect on GPA
Pass/ Fail (No Pass) – Limited use non-major courses (instructor authorized)







