Network Services Network servers provide a range of different services for users on a network, Network services are spilt into 4 categories: Directory services Telecommunication services File services Application services You need to be able to describe a wide range of services from each category and consider how business operations would benefit from them. Directory Services Used to management network resources Domain control, Account management, Database of all network resources (users, printers, clients, servers), DNS, DHCP User groups, User accounts, Policies Authentication management, E-commerce and secure webpages, Secure WAN connections, Routers, servers, switches and proxies, Wireless systems Communication Services Allows the network to communicate with the outside world in a number of different ways using the internet Communication email, internet relay chat (IRC), VoIP, discussion boards Remote access via mobiles, remote desktop, social networking File Services Allows the users on the network to share a range of different files from documents to media files and applications, File transfer (FTP) File sharing Application Services Resources which are used, by users on a networks – could be hardware or software based. Application software Shared databases, Web, Proxy Shared resources Printing, Scanner, Storage space, Voice over IP (VoIP), Mobile working, Authentication eg users, hardware Evidencing P5 / D2 Produce a leaflet for VeNew which describes the typical services provided by networks. Consider within the leaflet how their business operations would benefit from them. [P5] Produce a second leaflet which evaluates the typical services available from a network operating system directory service. Remember to include both advantages and disadvantages of each service and how VeNew can utilise each.
