BTEC IT Unit 09 - Lesson 10 Achieving D2 Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk Session Objectives Understand the services provided by a directory style network operating system (e.g. Active Directory) and evaluate their usefulness. Directory Services A directory service provided by a network operating system is a way of centrally managing your network, They often have a WIMP interface which visually displays different network components, The main purpose of Active Directory (used by MS Windows servers) is to provide central authentication and authorization services for Windows based computers, Active Directory also allows administrators to assign policies, deploy software, and apply critical updates to an entire organization. Active Directory stores information and settings relating to an organization in a central, organized, accessible database. Active Directory networks can vary from a small installation with a few hundred objects, to a large installation with millions of objects. Directory Services Used to management network resources Domain control, Account management, Database of all network resources (users, printers, clients, servers), DNS, DHCP User groups, User accounts, Policies Authentication management, E-commerce and secure webpages, Secure WAN connections, Routers, servers, switches and proxies, Wireless systems Activities Read pages 19-29 in the book…. For each of the directory services think about….. What the services provides / allows network managers to do The advantages of using this service The disadvantages of using this service A conclusion about the usefulness of this service How VeNew will benefit / not benefit from using the service Evidencing D2 Produce a leaflet or report which evaluates the typical services available from a network operating system directory service. Remember to include both advantages and disadvantages of each service and how VeNew can utilise each. [D2] D2 – Evaluate typical services available from a network operating system directory service. • Programming Constructs To achieve distinction you are required to evaluate the typical services available from a network operating system, directory service in the context of VeNew. BTEC Book – Unit 09 p19-29 Report / Leaflet Structure Explain what a network operating system directory service is, some examples and some the general benefits they offer, For each service provided by a network operating system directory service….. Fully explain the purpose of the service including exactly what service provides / allows network managers to do, The advantages of using this service, The disadvantages of using this service, A conclusion about the usefulness of this service How VeNew will benefit / not benefit from using the service. A conclusion at the end summarising your finding and if it is worth using a network operating system directory service or not.
