What was the first complaint expressed by the Pharisees? What was Jesus’ response? (Luke 5:30-32) The Pharisees complained that Jesus ate with tax collectors and “sinners.” Jesus responded by saying that the sick are the ones who need to see a physician. DISCUSSION GUIDE 6. What was the second complaint expressed by the Pharisees? (Luke 5:33) The Pharisees said that their disciples and the disciples of John fasted regularly, but Jesus’ disciples did not. DISCUSSION GUIDE Jesus Has Authority over the Sabbath (Luke 6:1-11) 10. What were the disciples doing that annoyed the Pharisees? Why was this irritating? (Luke 6:1-2) The disciples were picking grain and eating the kernels on the Sabbath. This irritated the Pharisees because they believed that this violated the Sabbath laws. DISCUSSION GUIDE 11. What Old Testament example did Jesus use to justify what the disciples were doing on the Sabbath? What claim did Jesus make about himself? (Luke 6:3-5) Jesus reminded the Pharisees that David and his companions ate the consecrated bread from the house of God. Jesus said “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” DISCUSSION GUIDE 12. (Luke 6:6-11) This event took place on the Sabbath when Jesus was teaching in the synagogue.
