5. What was the first complaint expressed by the
Pharisees? What was Jesus’ response? (Luke
5:30-32)
The Pharisees complained that Jesus ate with tax
collectors and “sinners.” Jesus responded by saying
that the sick are the ones who need to see a
physician.

The Pharisees said that their disciples and the
disciples of John fasted regularly, but Jesus’
disciples did not.

Jesus identified himself as the bridegroom. He
indicated that when he had been taken away
from his disciples that the disciples would fast.

When a patch from a new garment is put on an old
garment, the new patch is torn away making the rip
worse. When new wine is put into old wineskins the
old skins burst, losing the wine and the skins.

What were the disciples doing that annoyed
the Pharisees? Why was this irritating?

The disciples were picking grain and eating the
kernels on the Sabbath. This irritated the Pharisees
because they believed that this violated the Sabbath
laws.

Jesus reminded the Pharisees that David and his
companions ate the consecrated bread from the
house of God. Jesus said “The Son of Man is Lord
of the Sabbath.”

This event took place on the Sabbath when Jesus was
teaching in the synagogue. The Pharisees and
teachers of the law were angry because they felt that
this healing was in violation of the Sabbath laws.
