• grades 3-5
• Designed to close significant gaps in
their foundational skill literacy
knowledge
3
What does System 44 look
like in a classroom?
• Instructional model provided
• Brief teacher led whole group minilesson
• Students rotate between interactive
computer-adaptive software, smallgroup teacher led (differentiated)
instruction and independent
reading.
4
How do we know which
students should be in S44?
• Screening Tools:
• Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI)
• Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark level
• Students who are identified as 18
months or more below grade level will be
administered the Scholastic Phonics
Inventory (SPI), which will assist staff in
determining if System 44 is appropriate
5
SPI?
• Computer-based assessment that measures
decoding and sight-word reading fluency in
approximately 10 minutes
• Designed to be paired with the Scholastic
Reading Inventory (SRI)
• Groups students into 4 categories:
Advanced Decoder, Developing Decoder,
Beginning Decoder and Pre-Decoder.
6
Goals of S44 Implementation
• Align our assessment practices in an effort
to better identify students who are in need
of additional intervention
• Provide a more systematic approach to
instruction for our students who are
struggling with the foundational skills of
reading in grades3-5
• Accelerate student growth for Tier 3
students in the area of reading
7
What is critical to S44
success in our school?
• Dedicated classroom space which includes 8
computer stations.
• Use of student identification protocol to
identify no more than 18 students in grades
3-5 the program
• Schedule that allows for 60 minutes of
instruction in System 44 for identified
students. This time should not interfere with
student’s participation in whole group core
literacy instruction in the classroom.
8
