Morquio Syndrome Brought to you by a Chiefs cheerleader and her pom pom. What is Morquio syndrome? Morquio syndrome is an inherited disease of metabolism in which the body is missing or doesn't have enough of a substance needed to break down long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans. So what does that mean? Simply stated, Morquio syndrome occurs when the organs in your body grow, but the outside of your body stays the same. This causes people to look younger than they really are. They cannot move their muscles the same as we do because their bodies will not allow that. Some have to wear braces or ride in wheelchairs. Why is Morquio syndrome important to us? It is important because we are going to read a book about a boy who has this disease. His name is Kevin Dillon, but everyone calls him “Freak” since he looks different from everyone else. How do you think that makes the character feel to be called “Freak”? The truth is that these people are still human—they just look a little different from us.
