INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGYTIMBER ASSOCIATED THEORY TOPIC 1 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) What is “Occupational Health & Safety”? This term is used to refer to the physical environment where people work, and includes the school, where children learn. It is aimed at providing a safe environment for people to work and learn. Whilst Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) must be implemented in every department in the school, this topic is directed specifically at the woodwork rooms. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Occupational Health and Safety can be ensured by using a process that takes steps to: identify known hazards in the workrooms of the TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM areas assess the risks that may result as a result of the identified hazards decide on preventative measures to help minimise the level of those risks implement the appropriate preventative measures evaluate the effectiveness of the preventative measures OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Describe the correct dress that should be worn at all times when in the woodworking room. Shoes Leather, fully covered with a non-slip sole. Loose clothing Tucked in, and tie removed. Apron Full length, and tied back or front. Jewellery “Hanging” jewellery removed. Long Hair Tied in a pony tail & tucked in, or restrained in a hair net. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) When should eye protection be worn?. Safety glasses or goggles should be worn when operating all machinery. Why? OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) When should ear muffs be used? When using loud machinery for extended time. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Why is it dangerous to run in the woodwork room? You may stumble and fall and strike sharp machine edges or slip on sawdust. What other behaviour is strictly banned in the room, because of the possibility of accidents? Practical jokes can lead to serious injuries. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) How can you reduce the risk of tripping or stumbling in the room? Remove off-cuts of timber and sweep up sawdust after every lesson. What special precautions should be taken with portable power tools? Keep the power lead free of moving parts and check the plug and lead for damage. Check to see if the tool has a current safety compliance tag. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Why is it dangerous to operate the lathe when it has the guards removed? The guards prevent contact with moving pulleys and belts. finger entrapment pulleys OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) When should guards be removed from machines? Stop the machine. Remove the guard and make adjustments to pulleys and belts. When should they be replaced? Before turning the machine back on again. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Accidents often occur when using machinery if the operator loses concentration. What causes this? Other students talking to the operator can easily distract them. What is a common cause of accidents with the band saw? The operator does not ease pressure when the timber “breaks through” at the end of the cut. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) When using chisels and gouges what care should be taken to prevent accidents? Both hands should always be behind the cutting edge. What type of fires can the fire extinguisher in the woodwork room be used on? The extinguisher is rated for flammable liquid and electrical fires. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) How do you know if the extinguisher is fully charged? There is a small plastic tag which must be removed before the extinguisher will operate. What is the signal for a school evacuation? Continuous short bursts of the school bell. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) What hazards are associated with dust in the woodwork room? Wood dust can cause respiratory problems. Saw dust in a confined space may combust. Some wood dust may be cancerous. Describe the correct way to lift heavy objects? Bend your knees and keep your back straight. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Accidents should be reported immediately to the teacher. Why? The teacher is able to render first aid and ensure that injuries are promptly treated. Why should all cuts and abrasions be covered with surgical dressings? To prevent the risk of infection and minimise the spread of infectious diseases. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) How should “foreign bodies” be removed from the eye? Non impacted items can be removed by flushing. Embedded items require medical attention. What is an eye wash? A method of flushing a saline fluid across the eyeball. How can it be performed? With a small eye cup or, a plastic squeeze bottle, or splashing water from a tap. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY (OH&S) Squeeze Bottle Using an eye cup to flush the eye with saline. An eye wash station.
