Lessons from
David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17
Lessons from David and Goliath
• Fear Debilitates (17:11,24)
– We must not be afraid of the opponents of
truth and righteousness (1 John 4:4-6;
Hebrews 13:5-6; Matthew 10:28-31)
1 John 4:4-6
You are of God, little
children, and have overcome
them, because He who is in you is greater
than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the
world. Therefore they speak as of the world,
and the world hears them. 6 We are of God.
He who knows God hears us; he who is not
of God does not hear us. By this we know the
spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
Hebrews 13:5-6
Let your conduct be without covetousness;
be content with
such things as
you have. For He Himself has said, "I will
never leave you nor forsake you." 6 So we
may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I
will not fear. What can man do to me?"
Matthew 10:28-31
“And do not fear those who
kill the body but cannot kill
the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to
destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not
two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And
not one of them falls to the ground apart
from your Father's will. 30 But the very hairs
of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear
therefore; you are of more value than many
sparrows.”
Lessons from David and Goliath
• Fear Debilitates (17:11,24)
– We must not be afraid of the opponents of
truth and righteousness (1 John 4:4-6;
Hebrews 13:5-6; Matthew 10:28-31)
• Is There Not a Cause? (17:26-32)
– There is a battle raging for your soul! A cause
that is worthy of a fight! (Ephesians 6:10-13;
1 Timothy 6:12; Jude 3-4)
Ephesians 6:10-13
Finally, my brethren, be strong
in the Lord and in the power of His
might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you
may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against
the rulers of the darkness of this age, against
spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly
places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of
God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil
day, and having done all, to stand.
1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith,
lay hold on eternal life, to
which you were also called and have
confessed the good confession in the
presence of many witnesses.
Jude 3-4
Beloved, while I was very
diligent to write to you
concerning our common salvation, I found it
necessary to write to you exhorting you to
contend earnestly for the faith which was once
for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men
have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were
marked out for this condemnation, ungodly
men, who turn the grace of our God into
lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our
Lord Jesus Christ.

• Faith is the Victory (17:37,47)
– With faith, we overcome! (1 John 5:4;
Romans 8:31-39)
1 John 5:4
For whatever is born of
God overcomes the world.
And this is the victory that has overcome the
world--our faith.
Romans 8:37-39
Yet in all these things we
are more than conquerors
through Him who loved us. 38 For I am
persuaded that neither death nor life, nor
angels nor principalities nor powers, nor
things present nor things to come, 39 nor
height nor depth, nor any other created
thing, shall be able to separate us from the
love of God which is in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
Conclusion
David trusted God, and his faith
enabled him to defeat Goliath.
If we trust in and obey Jesus, he
will likewise save us!
Acts 4:12
Acts 4:12
Nor is there salvation in
any other, for there is no
other name under heaven given among men
by which we must be saved."
