What is the role of the student?
• In Model UN, students step into the
shoes of ambassadors of UN member
states, from
Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to debate on
current pressing issues on the
Organization's vast agendas.

ORIENTATION - JAN 2014

• The students, better known as
‘delegates’ in Model UN, prepare draft
resolutions, plot strategies, negotiate
with supporters and adversaries, resolve
conflicts, and navigate through the
UN's rules of procedure; all in the
interest of attaining International
cooperation to resolve problems that
affect almost every country in the
World.

• Before playing out their
ambassadorial roles in a Model UN,
students do extensive research on
the particular agendas to be
addressed. The problems are drawn
from today's headlines.

Foreign Policy Statement
(Position Paper)
• Many conferences require that each delegation
submit a position paper, a Foreign Policy
Statement (FPS)detailing your country's policies on
the topics being discussed in your committee.
Writing a position paper will help you organize
your ideas so that you can share your country's
position with the rest of the committee. It requires
extensive research from valid sources – preferably
UN websites or Internationally accepted news
websites (BBC etc).An FPS is required to be
written in a crisp and concise manner.
