PSBBMS - GBKM - MUN ORIENTATION - JAN 2014 3 What is the role of the student? • In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors of UN member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to debate on current pressing issues on the Organization's vast agendas. PSBBMS - GBKM - MUN ORIENTATION - JAN 2014 4 • The students, better known as ‘delegates’ in Model UN, prepare draft resolutions, plot strategies, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate through the UN's rules of procedure; all in the interest of attaining International cooperation to resolve problems that affect almost every country in the World. In this case the delegate’s government. PSBBMS - GBKM - MUN ORIENTATION - JAN 2014 14 Foreign Policy Statement (Position Paper) • Many conferences require that each delegation submit a position paper, a Foreign Policy Statement (FPS)detailing your country's policies on the topics being discussed in your committee. Writing a position paper will help you organize your ideas so that you can share your country's position with the rest of the committee. It requires extensive research from valid sources – preferably UN websites or Internationally accepted news websites (BBC etc).An FPS is required to be written in a crisp and concise manner. In case of an inevitable circumstances, the delegates must duly seek permission from the respective Chairs . • Internet Usage is STRICTLY Prohibited inside committee. • The usage of personal pronouns is strictly prohibited during committee.
