A message, main idea, or lesson,
about life, people, or human nature.

Not always clearly stated. You must
have INSIGHT!

again and again.

cultures, we say that it is

o Ask yourself the question, what
does the main character learn in
the course of the story?

o People express ideas and feelings
through their actions.

o How was the conflict resolved?

Ask yourself these questions:
o Is the theme supported by
concrete details from the work
itself?
o Are all the author’s choices of plot,
character, and conflict, controlled
by this theme?
2 Ways to Express Theme

Theme can be expressed in a single
word or phrase – love, greed,
friendship, the importance of family
Theme can also by expressed in a
more specific complete sentence – If
you lie to your friends you will lose
their trust.

of the theme?”

Then ask yourself, “What lesson
about this theme did the character
learn?”
