Students will develop a understanding of the congruency of basic shapes and learn manipulations which may take
place and allow the shape to remain the same shape and size.
Mathematics: 3rd Grade

Launch/Engage
“Where might we find a shape? (wait for response) Are all shapes the same size? (wait for response) Do you think some
shapes keep their size? (wait for response) Think of items that we use every day and think of their shape. Now think of what we
can do with these items and try to decide if the items keep their shape based on how we use them. Think in terms of sliding,
flipping and turning. Who can give me an example? (wait for response) An example would be we flip eggs in a frying pan and
the eggs flip over, but remain the same in size.”

Investigative Task
“Today we will determine congruent shapes as a slide, flip or turn. We will discuss how changing the direction or view of the
shape, will not change the size or congruency of the shape. You will participate in several activities dealing with congruent
shapes and telling whether they are a slide, flip or turn.”

Discuss
“Who can tell me what a congruent shape is? (wait for response) The word congruent means having the same size or shape;
equal. There are several ways to manipulate a shape and yet keep the shapes congruency. Some manipulations are to slide, flip
and turn.”

Practice/Extend
“You will practice determining congruent shapes in slides, flips and turns by using many different methods including;
representation processes, literacy connections and internet games.”

Assessment/ Evaluation
Teacher evaluation will consist of students completing a slide by determining the shapes of congruency.
Student self-evaluation will consist of students answering simple yes and no questions relating to the smart notebook lesson.

Closure/Ending
“Who can tell me what we have discussed today? (wait for response) Today we learned about congruent shapes and how they
can be manipulated. What does the term congruent mean? (wait for response) Congruent means the same or equal. What are the
ways that shapes can be manipulated? (wait for response) Shapes can slide, flip or turn and still keep their congruency. I hope
