Briefing for FYP 1
Specially for students of
HC00 & HC05

Introduction
 The aim of the final year project is to
test the student’s ability to apply the
knowledge learned over the years of the
course.
 The emphasis for final year projects may
be on the development of a software
product or on academic research. Topics
for final year projects can, therefore,
cover a wide variety of areas.

 Even though these topics cover different
areas, the work involved includes:



Identify a problem area (i.e. project topic)
and main objectives of the project.
Submit a proposal articulating clearly the
aims and objectives of the project.
Research and/or analyze the project area to
gain an understanding of the work involved.

Design, implement and test a solution if
appropriate.
Write a manual which clearly documents the
project and, if appropriate, how each of the
above stages were carried out.
Present the project.

 Starting next semester, FYP 1 will be
graded with 3 credits.
 Students are advised to approach
lecturers to discuss about project domain
and title before semester break.
 During semester break, start finding
relevant information and preparing the
project proposal.

Milestones
 Milestones for FYP 1 is as tabulated in
Table 1.0
 Pay attention to the tasks and the due
date for completing those tasks
 Always refer to your supervisor for latest
information and updates

 Chapter 1: Introduction

Provides introduction to the project/
research, objectives, scope and problem
background.
 Chapter 2: Literature Review

Reviews researches done or/and existing
systems/ applications that are related to the
project. Can also include techniques/
methods/equipments or technologies that
will be applied on the project.

 Progress report acts as a tool to inform
your supervisor regarding your project
progress.
 Inform your supervisor regarding
problems faced, changes to project and
justify the need for change, completed
stages or tasks.


Reports approaches and overall framework
taken in building the system/application or

This chapter can also contain justification

Presentation
 Students are required to prepare
presentation slides for the presentation
 The slides is summarization of project 1
report with clearly stated project
background, problem statements,
objectives, scopes, literature reviews,
methodology and preliminary results
 Sample slides will be provided later.

 Students who failed to present for FYP
will automatically failed the project
unless with written letter/ supporting
documents justifying the reasons of
absent before scheduled presentation.
 Students who failed to finish FYP during
presentation and request for delayed
presentation/ extend presentation will be
penalized.

 For student who wishes to extend their
presentation, a maximum period of two
weeks will be given to complete the
project. If failed to complete the project
on time, they will be graded as SM and
have to extend another semester or
more accordingly.

Amendment/Correction
 Students are required to correct/amend
the report as pointed out by the
examiner and presented/submit to the
examiner before week 15
 Students failed to do so will be penalized
accordingly (Fail? Extend project 1??)

Other
 Students are advised to meet and
discuss with their respective supervisor
at least three times (or more) per FYP1
or FYP2. Those who failed to do so (if
requested by supervisor) will be barred
from project presentation and have to
extend to next semester.

 Students who were found to plagiarize in
their FYP will fail the project
automatically. Further action might be
taken by school regarding this matter.
