What is BIM?
BIM is ‘Building Information Modelling’
• A collaborative process of virtual design, construction
and management of buildings
• The use of BIM unites design phase; construction
phase and post construction phases including facility
management.
• It means understanding and controlling the data flow
through these phases, ensuring leanness in its
handling and therefore driving efficiency.
• If we make the construction process more efficient and
eliminate uncertainties before construction, we can
drive down cost

Why BIM?
Reduce Operation Costs
Most of a buildings cost is in it’s operation
£1=£10=£100

Why from the Government?
Digital Leaders
Inefficient Industry
UK construction costs 20% more than Europe
Singapore takes ½ hour to register a planning application
All US projects have to be delivered in BIM
Zero Change contracts now possible
2016 All Government projects to be Level 2 Shared BIM
Access to Information
• A shared knowledge resource to support decision-making
• Improved coordination
• Increased efficiency
• Better decisions
“A model should provide access to all graphic and non graphic
information about a building, as an integrated resource”
