He travelled to Ireland, Spain and France and also guarded the defeated Napoleon. In 1828 he travelled to India to rejoin his regiment. He kept a beautifully illustrated journal of his voyage aboard the Duchess of Athol. It was a 93 day voyage (3 months) which was full of incident. The journal contains illustrations of sharks and ‘sucking fish’ The journal is important as it tells us about the dangers of crossing the oceans where sailors were frequently lost overboard or died. Travelling like this was often long and dangerous. Robert died in 1835 aged 40. He is buried in India. Your Mission To work in groups of three. • To dress up as a Victorian traveller and have their photo taken by one of your group. You will then record what you saw on your voyage using the archive material. • Working with the Victorian traveller you will be the illustrator, documenting what you saw on your travels.
