By Lara Godoff 7th period ; 2nd quarter 6th grade Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School Background Information: Solar Oven’s provide an easy way to save electricity. It has to be hot out to cook something, the sides of the cooker reflect the heat to the middle of the cooker. It works by collecting heat from the sun and concentrating it to heat a pot or other container for cooking. Solar oven feature some kind of reflector to gather and concentrate the sun’s ray’s. You can cook things in a cardboard box, Styrofoam, and metal and cooker’s. Testable question Does a aluminum foil solar oven cook faster then a black garbage bag solar oven? Hypothesis If you cook food on aluminum foil then it will cook faster then a black garbage bag. Experimental variables Aluminum foil Black garbage bag Control variables Cookies Cardboard Materials Card board box cut in half ( 2 ft. and 1 inch each ) 1 tablespoon of Cookie dough Aluminum foil ( 1 ft. and 3 inches ) Black garbage bag (1 bag ) Paper and pens (to take notes.) Procedure A I buy all my material’s B I cut the cardboard box into a rectangle shape and tape on the garbage bag onto the cardboard box. Repeat for the foil! C Then make the cookie batter and put a spoonful of batter on both, foil and garbage bag solar oven. D Then I make cookie batter & put a spoonful of batter on the solar oven. E Then wait and take notes and time the cookies and see which one cooks faster repeat x2. Observation & Data 15 Black garbag e bag Alumin um foil 25 35 50 Nothing chocolate has chips are happened melting The bottom is crisp but top is liquid The bottom is done but the top is still a little liquidly done at 62 min. chocolate chips have started to melt the bottom is crisp and top almost done Everything is finished at 53 minutes. it tastes good to! chocolate chips are melted and the bottom is starting to crisp 70 minutes of cooking 60 50 black garbage bag aluminum foil 40 30 20 10 0 type of oven Data Analysis In my project tin foil was faster, but they both cooked the cookie the same way from the bottom to the top. It seems that they both cook the same way but the tin foil seems to cook faster. Something unusual that I observed was that the cookies grew in different shapes the garbage bag grew up, and the aluminum foil grew flat and crisp! Conclusion My hypothesis was right, the aluminum foil solar oven worked faster! I know that it is right because the foil attracts heat and the heat reflects to each side of the foil which makes it heat up faster and cook better. The garbage bag did not work as well because the bag was plastic and it melted a little bit, which ruined the cookie and it cooked slower because it did not attract as much heat.
