Film Sound Project




Each student selects a short section of a
favorite film. They must then remove the
existing sound track and create a new sound
track using professional sound recording,
editing and mixing basics learned in class.
Power Point
Short Film of Students in ADR and Foley
Student Project Examples
Introduction

This is a production course designed to enable
students to develop a deeper understanding of
a film sound track. The three main
components of a film sound track; dialog,
music and effects are examined and broken
down into individual categories to reveal the
purpose of each effect in the story telling
process.
Project – Goals
Learn the professional mechanics in creating film sound
tracks.
 Learn how to translate and communicate creative goals
through established sound spotting and cueing methods.
 Learn how to manage media so projects can be recorded
and edited on multiple computers as well as properly
archived upon completion.
 Reinforce sound editing and mixing skills.




Students will acquire a broad sense of the tasks
required to perform post-production audio for a
film project.
This exposure should give students an
appreciation of the complexity and effort
needed to produce a final film sound track.
It is also the thought that if students can master
these practices that they will be enabled with
organizational skills, communication practices
and time management skills that will give them
an artistic advantage over non enable students.
Preparation for sound editorial and
recording:






Spotting
Scheduling
Recording
Media Managing
Editing
Mixing
Students must create :
Spotting notes, which accurately convey their ideas
about the sound track.
 ADR cue log that follows a standard professional
format.
 Foley cue sheets that cue all foley to be recorded.
 All spotting notes, ADR and foley cues must be clearly
formed so that other editors and sound engineers can
decipher and perform tasks based on their instruction.

Students must effectively organize
and engineer sound recordings.
Students must decide which sound effects can be
expected to be pulled from a standard sound effects
library and what will need to be freshly recorded.
 Based on the spotting notes students create a list and
gather custom recorded sound with portable recording
equipment.
 Students record ADR and foley sound effects to picture
using non-linear computer software.

Students must create computer based sound editorial
sessions that are specific to 4 individual tasks. In this
process they must clearly demonstrate the principles of
organized media management.




1 - Sound effects editorial to clean up and master student recorded
sound effects.
2- A foley record session with multiple tracks and digital movie.
3- An ADR recording session with multiple tracks and digital
movie.
4- A final edit and mix session with all combined tracks from foley
ADR sound effects with multiple tracks and digital movie.
Students must sound edit and mix
the audio that they have gathered in
sync to digital video.
Sound editorial must include cuts and rendered audio
fades and cross fades.
 Sound mix must contain the use of envelope volume
control.
 Sound design may include the use of rendered or real
time audio processing including equalization,
compression, pitch conversion, echo and reverberation
based on artistic needs.

Artistic requirements:
Student projects must demonstrate the artistic value of
dynamics, continuity, balance and fidelity congruent
with the story telling process.
 Don’t leave any holes, make it sound entertaining, and
have it neatly presented and organized.

Advantages

Allowing students to select their own section
of a movie is a great motivational factor.
Students are working on a film section that
emphasizes their own interest whether it is a
horror movie, sci-fi classic, or students own
film.
