Baptism Bible Study #2 Give It Up & Live It Up What are some bad habits that people try to give up? Sin is much worse than a bad habit, it is the relationship breaker between you and God. So when we get baptized we have to give up our life of sin. Romans 6:1-2 (ncv) So do you think we should continue sinning so that God will give us even more grace? No! We died to our old sinful lives, so how can we continue living with sin? You have ____ died to your sinful life. Romans 6:11-14 (ncv) In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive with God through Christ Jesus. So, do not let sin control you in your life here on earth. You must not be ruled by the things your sinful self makes you want to do. Do not offer the parts of your body to serve sin. Do not use your bodies as things to do evil with, but offer yourselves to God. Romans 6:11-14 (ncv) Be like people who have died and now live. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used in doing good. Do not let sin your _______ control life (v.12). good (v.13). But instead you should do ____ 1 John 3:9 (ncv) When God makes someone his child, that person does not go on sinning. The new life God gave that person stays in him. So he is not able to go on sinning, because he has become a child of God. God’s children do not ________ continue sinning. Galatians 5:24 (ncv) Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. Christians have Crucified _______________ / given up their old sinful and selfish selves. Colossians 3:5-9 So put all evil things out of your life: sexual sinning, doing evil, letting evil thoughts control you, wanting things that are evil, and greed. This is really serving a false god. These things make God angry. In your past, evil life you also did these things. But now also put these things out of your life: anger, bad temper, doing or saying things to hurt others, and using evil words when you talk. Do not lie to each other. You have left your old sinful life and the things you did before. Put ____evil all things out of your life. We need to start a new life… a spiritual life! Galatians 2:20 (ncv) I was put to death on the cross with Christ, and I do not live anymore – it is Christ living in me. I still live in my body, but I live by faith in the Son of God. He who loved me and gave himself to save me. I (the sinful person) do not live anymore in me because ______ Christ now lives in me. Galatians 5:22-25 (ncv) But the Spirit gives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control….Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. Colossians 3:10, 12 (ncv) You have begun to live the new life, in which you are being made new and are becoming like the One who made you. This new life brings you the true knowledge of God. Luke 2:46-47, 52 (ncv) Jesus was sitting in the Temple with the religious teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and wise answers…. Jesus continued to learn more and more. He grew taller. People liked him and he pleased God. Jesus continued to ______ learn about God as he grew Philippians 4:4-6 (ncv) Be full of joy in the Lord always…Let all men see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. Do not worry about anything. But pray and ask God for everything you need. And when you pray, always give thanks. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. And do what you learned from me. They give me good advice…Help me understand, so I can obey your teachings. I will obey them with all my heart. Help me obey your commands because that makes me happy. Learning God’s word will help me obey _____. The Value of Being a Christian What part of the body controls what you do, say, act, and live? Head/brain. Ephesians 1:22-23 God put everything under his (Jesus) power and made him the head over everything for the church, which is Christ’s body. The church is filled with Christ, and Christ fills everything in every way. Since Christ is the _____, head, and the church body, is the _____,what is the main function of the body (church)? To do what the head tells it to do. _____________________ Think about all the ingredients of a chocolate chip cookie. Would it taste good or right if one or two of the ingredients were missing? No. Look up in your Bibles 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 The church, like our cookie has many parts (v.12). _____ According to v. 13 what must you do to be part of the body (church)? ______________ Be baptized. Whose plan is it that you are part of the God’s. church (v.18)? ______ Look up in your Bibles 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 Explain v. 21-22 in terms of our youth group: Everyone is important. What should all of us be doing when one of us is hurting? Happy? Serving (v.25-27)? Be hurting, be happy, or serve with them. What The Church (body) Did. What was the one thing as a child you would not share with anyone? Look up in your Bibles Acts 2:41-47 List the things these 3000 people did that showed their love for Christ and each other. v. 42 baptized, devoted to the teaching, fellowship, meals, prayer. v. 44 spent time together, had things in common. v. 45 Sold & gave to those in need. v. 46 met together, ate together, took communion together and were happy together. v. 47 Praised God, enjoyed being with each other, outreach. If the first church did these things, should we do these same things in our church (youth group) today? Does this passage motivate you to try harder to make our group more like this?
