RECOGNIZE THE HOLY SPIRIT BY HIS ROLE John 16:12-16 • “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. 12 • He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you 14 what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. • 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. • 16 “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” --Jn 16:12-16 References to… "baptism with the H.S.", "Receive the H.S.", and "Be filled with the Spirit" are plentiful and convincing. But what does that mean? How do you know you have it? Are their counterfeits? we are cautioned: • "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.“ -- 1 Jn 4:1-3 How can we recognize the Holy Spirit and His working? • Some think of the Holy Spirit as… – "Spirit of praise" – "a Spirit of ecstasy" – a spirit of freedom.. • Jesus called Him "the Spirit of Truth"! (Jn 15:26) A RELIABLE GUIDE IN TRUTH "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth...." -- 16:13a • The Holy Spirit is the personification of truth. • The Holy Spirit wants to be our teacher -instructing in Truth. FAITHFUL IN BRINGING GLORY TO CHRIST "He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you."-- 16:14 • A unique characteristic of the Holy Spirit is that He always brings glory to Christ. • A correct view of the Holy Spirit Magnifies Jesus. So, Now… • You and I need this Spirit of God! • Nothing less than the Holy Spirit of God will satisfy. • So, how do you get in on this gift of the Holy Spirit? – Receive Him – Give yourself fully to Him.
