SHE Code 26: Safe use of Lifting Equipment and Lifting Accessories Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group Who should use this presentation & read the code • Staff or managers of staff, STFC site tenants, and those responsible for contractors on STFC sites whose work involves: Using or working with lifting equipment and lifting accessories Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group Introduction to SHE Code 26 “Safe Use of Lifting Equipment and Lifting Accessories” Why a Lifting Equipment and Lifting Accessories Code? • This code addresses issues raised by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER),1998. • Failure of lifting equipment has the potential to cause major injury and is reportable to the HSE. • STFC has over 5000 registered items of lifting equipment ! Key features • Only purchase BS EN or ISO standard lifting equipment. • Equipment designed ‘in-house’ must be approved by a competent person. • All lifting equipment must be registered so that it can be inspected. • All lifting equipment must be securely stored when not in use. • Ensure that it has been inspected and is not damaged in any way before use. Key points • Read section of the Code relevant to you. • Only carry out lifting operations for which you are suitably trained. • Difficult or Complex lifts must be subject to a Risk Assessment. • Consider people who may pass or work close to the lift area not just the people carrying out the lift. • Ensure that equipment and accessories are suitable for the lift. • Check that your contractors are complying with this code through their Lifting Plans and Method Statements. • Report all lifting incidents or near misses in SHE enterprise.
