Six Reasons to Go Deep
In God’s Word
• Problem with just a surface reading of scripture and not diving deep
• 6 metaphors that describe how the Word of God operates or
functions in our lives
• 6 reasons to study your Bible
• Bible study is a spiritual discipline
Six Reasons to Go Deep
1) Spiritual Food (Milk & Meat)
• The Word of God feeds your spiritual life (sustains you)
• The Word of God builds your faith (makes you stronger)
“… like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word,
that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, …”
I Peter 2:2
“For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the
word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food is for the
mature, …
Heb 5:13-14
Six Reasons to Go Deep
1) Spiritual Food (Milk & Meat)
• “Concerning Him (Jesus) we have much to say, and it is hard to explain,
since you have become dull of hearing.” (5:11)
• “For by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for
someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles (words)
of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” (5:12)
• “For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the
word of righteousness, for he is a babe. (5:13)
• “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their
senses trained to discern good and evil.” (5:14)
Heb 5:11-14
Six Reasons to Go Deep
2) Water (Cleansing)
• Sin leaves a serious residue in our lives
• Two residual effects of our sin are guilt & corruption
• The blood of Christ cleanses us of sin’s guilt
“… the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness (sin).”
I John 1:7
• The water of the word cleanses us of sin’s corruption
“… that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing
of water with the word, …”
Eph 5:26
Six Reasons to Go Deep
3) A Mirror
• The word acts like a mirror; it helps us to see the state of our heart
“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a
man who looks at his face in a mirror; for once he has looked at
himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind
of person he was.”
James 1:23-24
“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who
delude themselves.” (1:22)
Six Reasons to Go Deep
4) A Sword
• The word functions like a sword in two different ways
1) Spiritual Warfare (defensive & offensive weapon)
“And take … the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Eph 6:17
2) Self Discernment (instrument)
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any
two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul
and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the
thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Heb 4:12
Six Reasons to Go Deep
5) Lamp & Light
• The word functions like a lamp & light
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:105
Six Reasons to Go Deep
6) Lense
• The word functions like a set of lenses that allows us to interpret the
world rightly; to see how it really is (to make sense of it so we can see it
as God sees it)
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is,
that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2
• It is through Scripture (biblical lenses) that we interpret life
• We must learn to interpret Scripture rightly so we can then
interpret life rightly
